Iron sights on my 358 Frontier now

Bubba would be proud - I just installed an old surplus steel Remington BDL ramp/bead on my short barreled 358" Ruger Frontier workhorse.

With the NECG rear peep it seems a pretty good arrangement - especially as a hunt back up sighting system. Original Ruger front ramps are hard to source and too spendy - also hard to fit too with larger Frontier muzzle and their barrel band design. However it still goes against the grain for me to make a Frankengun. This is second best but will serve well enough I think.

Hey that looks pretty good. Good idea to mount that peep as far back as you can for better sighting with that short barrel.

Now all you need are some pictures with that gun leaning on a harvested black bear or deer.

Let me know if you want some tips on installing swivel studs on that canoe paddle stock.

A NECG banded would be top drawer all the way IMO.

The four quarter rib mounting screw holes are 8-36 which you can't find plugs for. So I got some stainless 8-40 plug screws and ran them thru a gunsmith friend's 8-36 die to make them 8-36. That handled those four holes. I found the positive stop screws to stick up too much - so I used the regular ones.

The two quarter rib alignment pin holes I intend to try melting in some grey coloured wax from kid's crayons maybe. I hope to be able to find a close match to the target grey.

I found some 8-36 stainless screws from Brownell's for the screw holes. The two pin holes I found a 12-36 tap which works perfect, then had a stailess rod turned down and threaded 12-36. That's the easy part! I'll be posting some pics and questions in the gunsmithing section in the next little while as I want to silver braze/solder them in place, grind them off, bead blast and Gun Kote. That should make them as seamless as can be.

Thanks 4 the tips. Looking forward to that. However I want to keep the option of easily restoring the quarter rib on mine. So it will never be as slick looking as what you are doing which sounds great. I understand what you are doing more or less but I'm a woodworker and somewhat limited in metalworking abilities. What you describe would be beyond me now. Look forward to seeing your report and end result.

I thought about having to restoring the quater rib at another time too, but these little guns just beg for peep sights, and if I evet wanted to "scope" it I'd put on one of the Aimpoint mini red dots off a short picatinny rail (Burris has some Ruger to Weaver bases that look handy). The scout scope concept was a neat idea in it's day, but there's nothing a red dot can't do as good, possible more handily out to 300yds. Further than that I'd be shooting a different gun with a regular mounted scope anyway. All IMHO of course!
