Iron sights vs low powered optics

What ever you choose and if you miss an easy shot that will help you decide. In dense forest you may see a clear opening little better with a scope.

I have several SKS and I mounted some older 4 x 24 scopes on them. I got a bunch for real cheap at a gun show (I think I paid $80 for 5 of them, haha). I just picked the best ones and surprise surprise, they do their job very well, much better than iron sights. Personally I would not shoot a 30-06 at that distance, ammo is too expensive anyways. Get an SKS, they are so cheap right now, get a mount and a cheap scope, buy some surplus ammo and you will have some real fun. More than you will ever have with that old 30-06 - aka shoulder cracker.

Howd you end up mounting the scopes?

I have lots of scopes and I miss a decent 2-7 that I used to have. I have a 1-6, some 2.5-10, 3-9, 3-10, 4-14, 4-16. For short range I put fibre optic sights on my Marlin 45-70, cheaper, less weight and pretty decent.

I'm an iron guy.
Especially peep sights.
I have more fun with irons overall.

But I would go with optics if possible. There are more advantages to optics.
The most important to me is ease of aquriing sight picture and able to see in low light.

I went with a scout mounted Leupold 2.5x IER in low QD rings on my 1895GS. Irons are a Wild West ghost ring with a Williams Firesite.

I have a P-14 sporter with Parker Hale irons. It is by far my favourite range rifle. But for hunting clearcuts, I use a scoped rifle, something in the 3-9 class, 2.5x8, 2.5x10, or 3.5x10 and even a 3x9 !

For the three 30-06s , the scopes are : BSA P-17 a Bushnell Scopechief IV 4x, M-70 a Leupold VariX-III 2.5x8 and M-700 a Leupold VariX-III 2.5x8

If you go the scope route, for under 75yds... I'd be looking for a fixed 4x.
Just my 2 cents.

I am hunting this year in a similar situation of 75 yards being a long shot. Took a risk and went for a 1-4 power scope and 4 power is ample, love it!

For the OP: A scope set at 1 power is still easier to use for me to shoot than iron sites, but there is something that is just more esthetically pleasing about irons... so if you are comfortable with them I would just keep doing your thing.

About the only time iton sights are an advantage are at ranges so short that you don’t even need sights. Even ifor close range bush hunting I use scopes, not so much for hitting the target as missing the trees.

Could run a fixed scope around 2.5x or so, could also run a LPVO or just use anything you want with see-thru rings, you'll have pretty high sight over bore with the scope to account for but that can be worked around. Worst case this still retains function of the irons.

An optic is better in every way, shape and form.

If you prefer iron sights tho, nothin wrong with that. Use what you want. But its definitely in no way superior.
I much prefer shooting with irons, but the fact of the matter is , I shoot much better with optics on my rifles because my eyes are no longer capable , even with spectacles on, and I have resigned myself to that . :(
I still like to hunt with a couple of my iron sighted rifles however, but have to keep the shots very short.

Hey you guys can do freaky wicked good shooting with irons...hats off for that! Better than lots of people can do with a scope.

But yeah kinda is what it is on that one. The right optic is always an advantage.
