Iron sights vs Optic for carbine

I have a tavor coming and every thread I see the first questions from anybody is what are you running for an optic. Besides it being a cool plinker I would like to take it to the occasional 3 gun match. After 23 years of shooting rifles I shoot a gun with an aperature as accurately as that with even a high powered quality target scope.

So accuracy is a wash for me, is there really a speed advantage with a low powered optic vs iron sights. Also I am unclear about the rules but would not an optic on your rifle bump you into open for IPSC 3 gun match?

Yes an optic will bump you to open in IPSC rifle.
3gun, depends on the rules of the match you shoot.

As to which is faster, depends on shooter skill.
Using a 1-X powered scope lets you use 1x up close and magnify for the long shots.
For me, no difference on close targets but I'm faster with a scope at anything over 100 meters.

I personally am faster with an optic at all ranges. I shot irons for years and consider myself a decent iron shooter. There is no contest with being faster with optics. I've seen it with a buddy too. He switched to optics and kicked my ass the next match we both shot (I should have shut my mouth I guess)

I'm an IPSC newbie but it seems that bumping a shooter who uses optics on a rifle is a bit, well, stuck back in time. Optics on long arms is the standard for police and military. Seems odd to make it "special" in this sport.

Pistols are different as iron sights are still pretty much standard issue.

Doesn't 3 gun have a class called tactical optics that allows optics on a rifle but not on the pistol (I don't remember where shotguns fall in). Just a curiosity question. Different sports, different rules I know.

I love my eotec. I use the large round circle for anything under 50yards....i tend to use the small dot for more accurate shots and distance. i grew up using only iron sights, but the dots and holographic sights are faster.
