Gatehouse and Cat are bang on with the speed factor.
Sight aquisition time is serious business and very few hunters understand it.
When you use irons or peep sights there are a total of six brain functions that need to take place before making a successful shot.
1) See the target
2) Shoulder firearm
3) Align front sight on target
4) Align rear sight on target
5) Center both sights with the point of aim and re-focus
6) Pull the trigger
With a Scope or Reddot there are only four brain functions neccessary to make the shot.
1) See the target
2) Shoulder firearm
3) Align the crosshairs or dot with the target
4) Pull the trigger
There have been many tests done on the amount of time it take your brain to perform these functions... the focusing of the sight on the target is the most time consuming brain function.
When using a scope you eliminate two of the most time consuming functions and this allows for a much faster sight aquisition time compared to irons or peeps.
Lower powered scopes are faster due to the quicker focus time.. and reddots are faster still... holosights are the fastest of all the sighting devices made today.
You wonder why the 20-20 shooters and the military use holosights... now you know.
I should add that there are up to 36 brain functions neccessary to use a scope with see-through mounts.
1) See target
2) Look through Cheap ass scope that is mounted too high and fail to focus
3) Grind your head down onto the stock and look under the scope for the iron sights fail to see the rear sight because it is too dark compared to the front sight and you cannot focus.
4) Go back to cheap ass scope that is mounted too high and fail too focus again because the heat from your overly large forehead has fogged up your cheap ass scope completely!
5) Slam your cheekbone down onto the stock again jarring the cigarette out of your mouth... you again fail to focus.
6) Lift your head up off of the stock and look over top of the cheap ass scope to try and see if your target is still in the same place.
7) Drop your rifle on the ground and beat your chest to try and put the fire from your cigarette that is consuming your chesthair and shirt.
8-36) Repeat the above until the target gets tired of watching and runs into the bush.
I'm serious.
