is 1911 a must have?

1911 is a classic. I think both the 1911 and the S&W hand ejector revolver are must haves. You can see the history of small arms of the past 100 years in your hands when you hold them.

And amazingly, they still work very well.

If you think the idea of a $500 pistol needing another $700 to work properly is a good one ... go for it.

They are definately design classics... GI 1911"s are classics. Personally I needed two :)

Neah! I don't, but I have one.... You should have TT-33 to understand what is perfect minimum (power and flowless design) and 1911 to understand what is classic pistol is. Then you have to buy High-Power as a classic small cartridge gun and Sig 226 as a perfect pistol. Finally, you're ready for plastic... for that one I'm not sure yet, but it's not a Glock for sure.

I'm a fan of the newer high end tuned models....target sights, ramped & coned barrels etc. I had a 1911A1 for a while, and while it was pretty to look at, I couldn't shoot it all that well with the tiny sights and it wan't all that easy for follow up shots. I'd buy an SVI or STI if I had the coin......I wouldn't buy another 1911A1 unless it was just for collecting.

I don't think they are a must have....at all the three gun matches I have been too it is asways a 1911 that craps out or jams(not just rincos)the owners all blam the ammo this,Mag that....my USP has NEVER had a Jam,FTF or stove pipe in 25000 rds.......

they are a great piece of history and nice to look at but...there are more upto date pistols out there

I think the BHP in 9mm is a must have, but a wheelie and a 1911 is good too.

FWIW I'm waiting on an STI Trojan in .40.

Once I have it I can practice 'safe' shooting, because I'll have a Trojan in my hand.

If you get an STI Trojan, you will love it.
I have one in .40 and it is my favourite pistol.
Yes,it says Trojan, yes it has front cocking serrations.
It could have "C.R.A.P. as a logo and I wouldn,t care.
It is a very well made 1911.
Now ,on the other hand, when I need something a little more classic,I pack up my Series 70 Colt Government and head to the range.
No front cocking serrations, fixed sights, collet bushing.
To me 1911's are a must have.
Then again,so are revolvers.

Must haves indeed. I would maybe add the Hi-Power to that list.

Definitely a classic as well as a must have IMHO
I have 4 of them. Sure there newer handgun designs and materials out there but nothing else feels like a good ol 1911

That's because the guns you see at the matches have been ####ed with more than Jenna Jameson or what's her name. Start equipping your USP with all sorts of aftermarket extractors, ejectors, plunger tubes, toilet paper dispensers, extended this, ambidextrous that, beavertails, recoilmasters...maybe add a ridiculously heavy (or light) recoil spring and a homemade asshat mechanic triggerjob for good measure and I’d bet money your gun would start jamming like nobody’s business. Or you could just buy a basic 1911 made by Colt and get a gun that's about as reliable as your HK. It won’t have an extra gigantic beavertail or a frame to slide fit that as tight as a nun's c**t but it will run as reliably as the 1911s that were used in the two World Wars and Vietnam. In other words, you can’t blame an excellent design for what the aftermarket has done to it.

Good rant.... It's like a gun magazine review and #### mag are mixed into one!:D
