Yes, well said. There is a reason why the 1911 design has been a best seller for the better part of the last 100 years. If it was a crappy design it would have long ago gone the way of all crappy designs...

This is very true, and exactly what I wanted to say.

I have seen many comments on reliability of 1911s. Imagine if all 1911s in the world were manufactured in one factory under proper quality control... Even Norincos would be 100% reliable.

On the other hand, if USPs can be just detail stripped within one minute, and anybody can throw in aftermarket parts from 30 different suppliers and only the frame is left original... If people can file, tap, drill, weld on the USPs like it is a hobby model... You will see all kinds of problems.

One of the reasons of why a 1911 is a must have, is that you can do all kinds of things to this gun and still make it work. It becomes YOUR 1911, the only one in the world.

When guns gets more "modern" and more plastic, it is only original factory parts that you can get, and there is not much fun in that...

+1, I need one to round out my collection. Might get an STI 1911, or possibly a Armco Norc.

I already have a revolver, alloy automatic and a plastic gun. All steel gun would make a good choice for my next pistol

btw I never liked BHP and will probably never buy one, but there just something about a loaded stainless 1911... :)

but with a good Glock or USP you don't have to #### with it to make them shoot....

in the last three gun matchs I held at my club three 1911's had issues one was a STI "lawman" one was a factory Colt(ammo he said it was),and one was a springfields loaded operator stove pipeing the shooter said was must have been the mag...:runaway:


I love the 1911 I have had a few over the past few years Rinco and a goldcup match

but to say you must have one I say no....its nice and all but you can get a much better 45 then it,I think if it ever makes it here I will get the HK45:dancingbanana:

As long as I'm able to shoot a pistol, at least one (more than one if I have a choice) will be a 1911 of some sort.

I know that there are newer, more modern designs.
There is no doubt in my mind that some of these new designs may well be better in some respects.

My Father taught me to shoot using the very same 1911 that he used in battle during WWII. that was over 50 years ago now.

If it should come to pass that I should have to defend my life or the lives of anyone in my care, I would feel most comforted by the weight of a 1911 in my hand.

I think everyone should own a 1911, just like everyone should own an AR15. Personally, I prefer shooting my G21 to my Kimber, but there's something special about those classic .45's.
 
A must have ... NO, a nice to have... Yes. The 1911 is a classic, no matter what you do to them, add to them tinker with them... they are still 1911's.

They are classic, they are the "Harley Davidson's of Handguns."

But then again, they are over priced, break often and leak oil as well. :)

You evil, miserable person!:p

Granted I've had mag problems (if that's what you were referring to), was due to the mags I got (there were Q.C. issues with the followers and they sent me new ones) and the subsequent "fixes" I tried to make. All better now! Rematch???

I must admit that the 1911 needs proper attention to function properly. With all the different manufacturers, gunsmiths, parts you're bound to have problems more often than not if things aren't done properly. Take mags for instance, how many manufacturers are there.

That being said the 1911 is still running with all the top dogs after 100 years, it just works. Every man needs a 1911, boys can play with the rest of the toys out there :D
 
I've had plastic guns for a while and just got a 1911 a couple weeks ago, it's quickly becoming my favourite. If not 1911, at least get a heavy, metal frame single action, it's a completely different shooting experience.
