Is 30-06 still a decent round?

A .270 is not a better choice for big game at all!!

A little flatter shooting, but you have a heavier larger diameter bullet with a 30-06, and within hunting distances thats exactly what you want.

I find it interesting you didn't mention the 300 win mag in your OP. It would be the improvement over the 30-06 that you seem to be thinking the .270 is. I started a thread awhile back titled "Do I Really Need A .300 Win Mag?", and the answer from most posters was NO. A 30-06 is all you really need.

actually, i find the 270 a "bit of an oddball" in that only the 270and the 270 weatherby, afaik uses the 277 diameter bullet- move up to the 7mm class and there's a whole slough of cartridges that use that - everything from 7x57 mauser to 7mm remmy mag, with various versions of the 308 and 06 cases besides

Huh? 270 WSM and 6.8 SPC.
And has anyone had a hard time finding .270 ammunition or reloading components lately?
Lame man, very lame.

Well actually, the old .303 British will kill a moose just as dead as a .30-06 will.
Or for that matter, any of the magnums.:)
Although a person might have to learn to be a better hunter, in order to get a tad closer to the game.;)

I used a .303 British Lee Enfield for some years, while living deep in the bush in North-Eastern B.C..
It was the only center fire rifle available to me at the time.
I still own a couple, and would not feel under-gunned with one of them in my hand, even today.
I loaded mine with heavy bullets, 215-220 gr. preferred.
100 gr. Speer plinkers over a bit of 4759, to take the heads off a grouse or two.

That was over fourty years ago.
Life was much less complicated then Eh!:)

I thought it was a funny way to state the question as well. But it seems like when the conversation turns to big game calibers 30-06 doesn't seem to come up as often as "newer" calibers for some reason. All I hear are guys praising the 300WSM and 7mm Remington and quite a few people I know have moved solidly into the 270 camp. Seems like the old 303 is not the old standby it used to be either (I thought it was anyway).

I own many centerfires, in a variety of chamberings.
The 30-06 has always found a spot in my gun selection.
At times 3 or 4 spots, lol.
The 30-06 is the "do everything" chambering.
Buy it and use it with confidence.
Eagleye.

After owning and practically shooting just about every calibre, and "boutique calibre" known to mankind, I have come to the conclusion that the following five calibres are "must haves" for Canadian game and trump anything else on the market, for a multitude of reasons. (of course this is my humble opinion):

30-06 Sprg
7x57mm
308 WIN
12 gauge
22 LR

The .30-06 is, imo, one of the best cartidges for hunting North American game. With modern powders and bullets it is even better than it used to be.

I guess Phil Shoemaker (Grizzly Skins of Alaska) says pretty much all you need to know on his website:
The 30-06 was large enough to kill the world’ record Brown bear and still is.

From 6.5x55 to 30.06 all will kill effectively, recoil will be different though.
Personally I would concentrate on the rifle I really want and the fit and function. As I get older I gravitate towards look and feel and realize that a fun shooting rifle (low recoil) adds up to more accurate shooting.

The 30-06 is just as good as it ever was, a bit better actually due to powder advancements over the last 100 years. Not going to get any argument here, it was pretty hot #### compared to a 30-30 or 30-40 Krag. Sorta like, I don't know, a magnum or something.:p

All the praise you can heap on it, you can just add 150-200 yards to and you just described some .300 mags that have been around for 50 or 100 years.

I think that if it weren't for Jack O'Connor, the .270 would have died and appropriatly early death.

7x57 deserves all its accolades.

Those comments contradict themselves, and will lead anyone that thinks about it to believe your stating a factless opinion.
The 7x57 now is a 7mm-08 in a long action, failing to take full advantage of the standard bolt face in the standard action.
The .270 shoots ridiculously similar bullet weights fast enough to beat the 7x57 on all counts with indistinguishable difference in recoil. At the time that the .270 was released, with the powders being what they where, the .270 out performed the 7x57 in the same action with aplomb.
To say the .270 doesn't deserve its place is to beat your head against a giant wall of proof that states otherwise.

still, that's ONLY 4 - compared against the 7mm "family" or the 30 family, it IS ODDBALL
