Is $300 bucks fair??

A fella I hunt with wants to part with a older Savage 340D. The bluing is good and the action is good. Stock is not cracked at all but has some decent dings in it. The gun is chambered in triple deuce with 1 mag and has no scope but does have that wonky looking scope mount on it.. He won't give me a asking price (cause he's weird like that) and wants me to make him an offer. It's nothing pretty but I thought it would make a decent truck gun.. I know nothing about these and was thinking about offering him $300 .... Is that a fair offer or should it be higher or lower??

Usually they sell for that at the gunshops, $350 for one in real nice shape. I've seen them for $250 and they sell fast, I know of a couple places right now that have had them listed at $300 and they haven't moved in 6 months.
 
Lower, much lower! You can get a new Savage Axis for $300. A sporterized Enfield would run around $150. For a "truck gun" you want cheap but rugged. If memory serves, the 340 series was set up for a side mount so putting a scope on it might be problematic and the mags can be a source of frustation. Personally, I'd pass on it all together and look at the Axis or the Stevens 200. You'll be better off with one of the entry level rifles in the long run.
 
I bought one chambered in 22 hornet for $375 (just because I like the caliber) on here and think I could get my money back out of it when it comes time to let it go... Not too sure what shape the one you're looking at is or how rare the 222 is. Those factors will have an effect - I think you're pretty close to the number at $300. Is it iron sights or scoped?
 
Weird? So if you offer considerably less than what is being suggested on this site, will he be offended?
What do you plan on using this rifle for? For another $200.00 you could buy a gun off the EE that might better suit your purpose.
How bad do you want this gun? You can ask for one in the EE under WTB and see what offers you get.

. What he said x 2. I have one in 30.30. Nothing wrong with it , it is what it is. But for what its worth a Stevens in .223 is a better choice. Unless you want iron sights.
 
I think were mixing up some prices vs calibers.

Ya, the 340's in 30-30 aren't worth more than $150-$200 in my opinion but the other calibers usually bring a premium.

Kinda like a Savage 99C in 284 is gonna bring alot more than a 99C in 308, same with a BLR in 257 Roberts is gonna bring more than one in 308.

I don't know if he would necessarily be offended, I was just concerned about low balling a friend and hunting partner. Upsetting him isn't worth getting a great deal to me on a gun. I don't necessarily need the gun, just thought if it was a good deal I would pick it up...

I'm gonna touch base with him today and see if I can get a better idea as to what he's looking to get out of it. I've read that they are fairly accurate in the .222 cal.
 
My dad had one in 30-30 and I am not particular fond of them. Those distinctive "savage" looks go way back. I wouldn't pay $300, not when you can buy a new savage for not much more, and personally I'd rather have 223.
 
If you want to buy something then it is up to you to make an offer. When someone wants to sell something it is up to him to quote the price. If neither party likes the figure no one should be offend if one walks away. When a counter offer is expected you as least have a starting point. A truck gun should be able to take a bear or deer legally. Iron sights on a .222 does not really qualify for a truck gun. Paying $300.00 does not strike me as having any profit margin when you decide it is not for you . . . paying $200.00 might. Given and willing seller and a willing buyer everything will sell.
 
Id say 300 is fair, but i might be biased, because I like mine.... its my coyote gun...

mine has the same mount, and i threw on a cheap 3-9x40 scope.. The detachable mag is a nice feature as is the wood stock, which in my books puts it above the stevens 200
