is $375 for a 1957 marlin 336 a fair price?

Actually, closer than "Kissing cousins."
I have a 336 in 35 Remington with serial number in the 30,400 range and it also has the R designation, showing date of manufacture as 1957/58.

"...You got a bargain..." Wouldn't go as far as that, but $375 isn't too bad. Epp's is listing 'em at $441. The 1957 part doesn't really matter. Marlins aren't like Winchesters with the Pre and Post '64 stuff.
"...action is nice and smooth..." Marlins are like that. They make Winchesters and most other levers feel like 5 miles of bad road. Even when BNIB.

I'd rather take a mint (or even good) old Marlin over a new Remlin any day of the week. The older ones didn't have any issues like the new ones.

Ci was talking to some guys at the range and they said they were at epps and had to go through 11 bnib marlins before they got one that cycled snapcaps properly. So that kinda scared me a little. Nevertheless i was gonna get a new 336ss...but at $699 vs. this...when i saw it and actually fired it before buying (2 lucky shots w/in an inch at 50 yrds)...i thought sure why not anyway...i'm sure there's better ones out there, but i'm happy. it's my first lever action...surprised at how easy it is to take apart and clean!
