is 40yards far enough to test a new load?

I read the reply's and sounds like your all talking but no one ever tried.

Sounds like you should have worded your question more accurately to read "Has anyone tested a load at 40 yards?" Instead of looking for opinions on its potential theoretical validity.

H4831 u know i love u man. Don't be insulted, I respect ur info. maby i shoulda typed *the masses * but regardless. i say it like i see it.

ya Dogleg i know what ur saying. I was using Winchester ball powder in the 22-250 last year and it was a noticeable drop on the very cold days. On one hand this is one thing i like about shooting at the same time. Improving by knowledge by hands on experience and Data Data Data. I record alot of my shooting to analyze and work at becoming a better marksman.

I do use varget in my target 308 and hunting rifle but for the 22-250 i chose instead to go with the powder that is most constantly in stock at my local shop. it can be a real pain when everyone is out of varget.

Some advantages to volume loading ball powders as well. I don`t mind weighing 50 or 100 charges, but when you need a couple thousand it gets real old, real fast.

Watch for lot to lot variation in H380 as well. There`s a reason why published data is all over the map with this powder.
