Is 45 the most accurate pistol caliber?

.45 ACP is my favorite cartridge to shoot. 1911-G21 doesn't matter, it is a great cartridge that is also inherently accurate and fast to follow-up with. (someone mentioned the "R" word {revolvers}) <With these it's all about the Magnum offerings or go home. :p

^^^^this!

I can't wait to find our how accurate I can make loads for my sig in 45 acp. Just about to get membership at a club, then I think the policy is 6 months before you can shoot pistol on your own.. nothing seems longer or farther away than that number for me right at this moment.
Except dealing with an idiot boss, an incompetent, lazy, stupid and idiot coworker for the next 25 years, perhaps lol.

Sig P220's are dead nuts accurate. You can easily get 1.75" or less at 25m from a ransom rest with good loads. 4.2gr Titegroup and 200gr swc works for me :)

Yes I found that article as well. Interesting that they had barrel bulging issues with such a low pressure round. I wonder what the advantage is of such a thin barrel.

The problem was related to hollow base bullets with too thin a skirt, and trying to drive it too fast. Skirt would separate and stay in the barrel, next round would result in severe over pressure and the barrel would bulge or split because hammerli turned the main length of the barrel too thin. Their intention was to reduce forward weight on a six inch barrel. Most of these happened in Australia where thin skirts, max loads, and high summer heat led to failures. Mine had a split barrel when I bought it, had been welded and straightened by a master smith, so inspite of looking like the devil had a dance party in it, it still shoots very well. But I am still trying to find a replacement.

Very interesting. Thank you.

Huh? You need to get that "Policy" changed.

I think they just want to make darn sure someone is safe with a rifle before they entrust them with a pistol. I talked to my sponsor today, and offered to let him be the first to shoot it, he said he'd be honoured to, and that that policy could be fast tracked for some :0

I have titegroup, cci 350? Primers, 230 gr hp jacketed I believe, let me double check that, but I have to look at what the books say about that combo. Thanks for the load info though.

My range has probation shoots (Newbie w RO), there is a proven proficiency test at the end...but after that, members monitor, enforce and self regulate either New shooters or public shooters. If someone is displaying hazardous handling of a firearm, we collectively will let them know...RO's encourage the practice, and it works. I've only seen one issue where things got a bit heated and the RO intervened and threw the guy out.

45 acp as well as 45colt are inherently accurate cartridges...especially handloaded.
As for the firearm..well ...plenty of variance there...depends on the firearm.

I would say 44spl is right up there as well as the most inherently accurate pistol cartridge....38spl as well.
Either of these rds can easily make ragged holes in the 25m targets in fairly run of the mill pistols when handloaded.
