...for a 46### serial-numbered Colt SP1?

* carry-handle ground off and a rail and Burris scope mounted (gunsmith)

* front sight-post ground off (gunsmith)

* current-issue round-style front handguard (i.e., NOT original triangular)

* Harris folding bipod

* 2 Colt mags (1x30, 1x15)

This rifle's mine if I want it but I have to make a decision quickly and don't have time to research much so I'm throwin' it to you guys.

I too would go in at $600 max - I am not a big fan of modifications which cannot be reversed; especially when they are significant (the carry handle being cut off is major). The original owner should have just got a new upper.

However, $500 to 600 is good since you can buy and a new stripped upper for around $220+'ish.

If you "can" (i.e. debt is not bad if it is not alot) just plop down $1200+taxes and get a brand new AR-15 from Questar :)

Quite alot of these 'hack jobs' were done prior to the mass production of 'flat tops'. Without photos I'll pass on commenting on the craftsmenship.:rolleyes:

I had a Colt heavy barreled upper that had the same treatment done. I got it for a song, ($400) because alot of people would just turn their noses up at it. It was well worn, but printed groups that would give $3000 Sigs a run for they're money. As a matter of fact, I still use the barrel and bolt for Service rifle shoots.

Please do not compare Colt's to Norinco, they are nowhere near the same.

If you are worried about looks, then by all means pass. If you want a shooter, I would consider it. Of course, it never hurts to make a lower offer.;)

Ummm...I didn't compare Norcs to Colts...show me a $700 Colt AR...:rolleyes: I own 3 ARs, none of which are Norcs...I also know Jon personally and believe for $700 the Norc would do everything he needs it to do.

A bubba AR. I would walk on by unless you are using it as part gun for a rebuilt project.

.;)

You are right. Colts are overpriced, over hyped, with the worst finish out of any of the ABCD manufacturers........;)
At least with the Nork, you get what you pay for, with a colt, $1000 of the price is just for the name.......:confused:

Worst finish? Huh? Only gun with nicer blue than my series 70 and 80 Colts I have is a presentation S&W... :confused:

*EDIT, laugh, I thought I was in the 1911 thread... :redface: I see then, not everyone likes the Colt grey, and now I see why you mentioned the ABCD's...

Having an original Colt SP1 without the forward assist and all would be cool as a piece of history - this isn't that for sure. This would make a half-decent service-rifle/(with different optics) tac-rifle gun - I just didn't know about the fairness of the price.

Think I'll offer him $500 and see what he says...

If it's no-go I'll get a CZ858 instead (or maybe save and buy an AR180B)

'Cept look half-decent - hate the fugly furniture :) - but you're right that you get something half-decent for an not-half-bad price.

This AR15 doesn't look too bad - the choppin' was all done by a gunsmith or someone who had decent tools.

Oh, should have mentioned too that it's hadd a trigger-job and apparently the tolerances are also very tight - the current owner says he's done very well with it in IPSC 3-gun and service-rifle type matches and I'm inclined to believe it is probably on the higher-end of AR15 accuracy - question is does this change y'all's opinion $$-wise any?

Hey Jon, I've seen unbutchered SP1s here for well under $1000. I'm sure I've seen a couple around the $800 mark. As an AK-guy myself, I can't speak from experience, but I do read pretty much every ad in the EE. hey, stick to Combloc and join the Red Army TMSA TacRifle team :p. Accepting any and all combloc fans :). They're fugly and they fugklin work. :D.

I'd love to see a Norinco AR on the 500m firing line. Really. Proof is in the pudding, if someone can prove to me they are accurate and dependable, I'm all for it. I'm less concerned with how something looks than I am with how it functions.;)

Jon, you can buy a brand new Norc CQ311 for $699...it will get you into the AR club and its never fired a shot.

He's asking about a used Colt for $800, and that is your reply. If this isn't a comparison, I'm not sure what is. ;)

if you can get it cheaper, it could be worth "restoring", dont know what an original upper, and triangular hand guard would run you, but that would be my intent if I was to pick it up.
