Is 9mm and .380 interchangable?

9mm usually refers to the 9mm Luger which has a case of 9 x 21

.380 is also known as 9mm short and has a case of 9 x 17.

Since both are rimless, they rely on the case mouth to chamber and as such,
the difference in case length would make them not interchangeable.

Not interchangeable. The cop is wrong.

However, the point was that a 9mm (Luger) was loaded with the wrong ammo, and this was used in the murder.

I have fired 40 S&W in a 45ACP and 9mm in a 40. (And 223 in a 7.62x39) And 308 in a 306.

The extractor will sometimes hold the smaller round on the bolt face and it will fire.

In the case of a .380 (which I have not tried) since the bullet is the correct diameter, it would fire with lethal force and accuracy.

Yes. 9mm luger/parabellum is 9x19.

No they are not interchangeable. I would think a 380 wouldn't go into battery, and a 9mm might chamber a 380 (i don't know if the dimensions are similar enough) but there wouldn't be anything holding it against the breech face so it likely wouldn't fire.

The 9mm Luger is a tapered case so while the case mouth would hold a .380 bullet (both around .355/.356) the case head of the 9mm Luger (.392) would be too big for the 380 Auto chamber (case head diameter .373). Haven't tried it though so YMMV.

I meant to type 9 x 19. I should read my own post before hitting enter.

The only 9mm pistol that apparently would digest a variety of 9mm cartridges is the Astra 400.

Astra 400 multi caliber testing

There is also the Phillips and Rogers m47 Medusa, which can take a large variety of things no bigger than a 357mag. Sweet idea, not so sweet execution if I remember correctly (haven't watched the video in a long time)... Your mention of the Astra reminded me of it though.

Okay so they dont actually say 9mm Luger in the OP's clip(I couldnt be bothered to watch the whole thing). The gun is described as a browning 9mm but it could in fact be a gun chambered in 9mm Browning cuz thats whats marked on the gun. Browning 9mm is in fact a .380 as is 9mm Kurtz, 9mm Corto and others. Very unclear as to what they are saying.

lol intentionally!?! Or do you need your glasses checked?! Sounds like the sort of thing I would (and have once, now that I think about it) do accidentally!

I've heard .40 can be fired in a 10mm, but I've never tried it... thought it would be a bad idea

Can prob single load a .380 into a 9mm for a Mad Max type scenario but it is not gonna load/feed/eject properly on its own and I assume accuracy will suffer too?

Besides that, just don't do it!!!

I have a lot of guns and a lot of same guns in various calibers. Once the wrong mag gets picked the fun starts. never had any damage to a gun (or me). And a few of the combos were done on purpose to see if they would fire (308 in 30-06 was one done on purpose).

I would think so too. And from what my favourite gun channel on YouTube says, there's not much reason to do so anyway.
