Is a 10/22 aftermarket bull barrel worth the money?

Oh I will be the first to agree that the Sr is over priced. Its heavy as snot and not that accurate. And yeah, my little shoots tighter groups all day long. I was planning on selling it, however I have found new love for this thing and plan to do some mechanical upgrades now.

Thanks, Yea he rips on the SR22 soo much, also goes on about Tac Lol/Axiom light weight builds, he forgets what a Nancy is. As you can see he developed a bunch of followers that want him gone.

SR22 done up is around 8lbs good weight for a AR15 trainer. Only thing I didnt like was having to remove the upper cover to take it apart.

I guess you could get a Dlask fluted barrel to save some weight. But what your ultimate goal for groups 84WH1?

Imo NO.
So buy a stock 10/22 drop in in whatever stock you like and the money saved buys your upgraded barrel!

Actually I was. 12 years Infantry, tour in Afghanistan in 2007.

He already has the gun, the chassi etc so why start over? I think you need to find out what a nancy is before you start calling others one.

84wh1 you got a trigger job? The PowerCustom comp hammer made a difference. I only went with them because I couldnt get a VQ.

In the end, id like to try and stay under 1" at 50 meters. I know many other variables come into play but i'd still like to tinker with my SR a little bit to try and get the most out of it. As for triggers, I still run the factory unit. I thought about a kidd, however I have no desire to dump 400+$ into a trigger for my 10/22. Id rather spend that money on something like a Geissle trigger for my AR or tavor. I might go el cheapo route and drop a BX into it. 2.5 lbs break for 140$ is a cheap enough upgrade for me

Really in the end, I was more or less wondering if a barrel upgrade is worth it since it seems like everyone and their dog swaps the barrels on their accurized rugers

For the 70$ for the PC comp hammer/spring kit ( I got it from Hi cal services ) It half the weight of the trigger pull ( like 3# ) I would try that first before changing barrel.

Look into having your barrel rechambered and recrowned. Stock barrels are capable of a lot more than they are given credit for. Loose chambers and a poor crown make for less than accurate guns. Do the trigger first, then do ammo testing, then if you can't get nice groups, look into reworking or replacing the barrel.
 
I have a "nemohunter" barrel.
It's an Ruger OEM barrel that was set back .200", re-chambered to match grade specs with the muzzle re-chambered & hand lapped @ 11 degrees.
Shoots better then I do. :p

Are you very handy with metal? If so I can send you the files to do a Tier1 Brimstone type trigger job using your stock components. Fully adjustable hammer and sear plus trigger return plunger over travel screw and torsion trigger return spring. If that doesn't help your accuracy enough then do a barrel swap. Just PM me your email.

Oh yeah, +1 to what 10mark22 says about stock barrels, ask him who to get to do it and go with his recommendation:)

For me, my time. Original cost of reamers about $75 per, crowning tool about the same. Once you have done a few, it doesn't take long. Rebuilding the extractor groove and making the shim for the vblock take the most time.

With the droop. All it really does is effect the elevation being requires you using more than you need. Being the barrel is pointing down due to the weight.
 
I don't know if the "bull barrel" part is worth the money or not. I upgraded to a McGowen bull barrel on my 10/22 (among many other upgrades- actually I basically made a new 10/22). The accuracy improved significantly. The factory 10/22 had baseball sized groups with anything less than fancy ammo. I would say hands down it was worth it. I did get flamed by a bunch of guys on here telling me that I just need to "Learn how to shoot". One fellow that was adament I simply couldn't shoot also owned 2 CZ's and and Anshutz. No wonder he thought factory was good enough. I digress though.

Unless its purely a range gun I think i would either recommend a better factory contoured barrel or a lightweight bull barrel.

Bottom Line- Worth the cost but not worth the weight.
