Is a .17 indeed better than a .22?

I was reading one of the posts and it was stated that a .17 is more accurate, travels further and is more precise than a .22.

How is the ammo price difference between the two?

What rifle would you recommend?

Thanks

The general consensus is that .17HMR is super accurate on calm days. It's a teeny little bullet with a lot of powder behind it so it's trajectory is pretty flat. It's great for destroying little critters or punching holes in paper. It's also a lot noisier to shoot.

Nothing is a cheap as bulk .22LR ammo. If you need to purchase match grade .22LR ammo to get the accuracy you're looking for then you are probably paying the same.

.22mag ammo? I dunno, but I believe it's somewhere in-between.

I take one of each each time we go out, which is at least once per week from feb till sept. I have CZ american in each. The 22 likes Xpert $12.99/500. I shot 5000 rnds last year. The 17 is more costly---a lot more. $120/500. I cannot afford to shoot the 17 to the same extent that I shoot the 22. That said at the end of the day when the shots tend to be longer because of wilder gopher ----out comes the 17HMR. I love shooting the 17, its fun. The accuracy is great, esopecially on plus 100 yds. I wouldn't give up either.--Cowboy

I use my .22 for close range gopher saturation fire whereas my .17 is for head shots at almost any range. the .17 does have a problem with flying so fast it pin cushions a gopher resulting in a hole death. although if you can hit them from a downward angle the bullet travels right through hits the ground and explodes launching the gopher into the air resulting in a "crowd pleaser"
