Is a 22lr enough for siksik ...

I had one bite an HLEM cable about 20 ft from me....I sent him flying about 20' in the air...pretty sure he was missing his front teeth :D

Of one's I've seen shot a 30-06 does a nice job ;)

Is a 22lr enough for a siksik(ground squirrel)? Discuss! :D

You should have parked your truck next to the critter for scale. No telling what would be enough gun, unless we can judge it's actual size.:D

A Mosin-Nagant with 185-grain soft-points is about as small as I'm willing to go. I'm looking to get some 220-grain AP rounds loaded up though - every fifth round in the magazine for that last ditch life-or-death shot.

One of the buggers very nearly got me the other day; caught it too low in the body; only annoyed it. Happily, a Mosin makes a fantastic war club in a pinch and I was able to beat it to death after about twenty minutes of hard fighting. Made Gandalf versus the Balrog look like two kids squabbling in the playground over a dropped cookie.

Depends on the range you're trying to shoot them at.
If you're trying to hit them at 300+ yards, then, no, the 22lr isn't enough.

My 22lr hits them fine at up to 100 yards. But much beyond that and I reach for my .222

Yup... up to about 100 metres, after that, better go with something with more kick... like a 22 hornet.

Oh, I don't know; catch a calm day and figure out the drop, a reasonable 4x scope... Not much different than trying out long shots with a .45/70, really. Out to 100 easy, out to 150 if you've got a good hand and feel for your rifle.

But when you boil everything down, all you really need is the perfect Gopher round. As it happens, the .17 calibre is the most suitable.

The .17/50 BMG. You know those cheeky gophers that are laughing at you on the otherside of the province? Yeah, they won't be laughing much longer.

:D

Might want to bring at least a .223 with varmint grenades as back up. You know...just in case the .22lr doesn't kill in one shot. :p
