Is a .308 capable of taking big game in my area?

308 will take ANYTHING on the North American continent with proper shot placement. One of the best hunting cartridges in the world.

With a good strong action, the .308 has been pushed into the 65000 psi range with 200gr bullets. I'd go so far as to say that it would take just about any game ANYWHERE if loaded correctly.

A 200gr bullet at 2700fps is about 3200 ft lbs of energy. The .308 doesn't mess around.

308 - a terrible round - I only have 3 of them - an old rem 788 - a rem pump and a blr - I might have to try another bolt in 308 before I make up my mind on that round - terrible round (for anything directly infront of it)

Well I'm probably not going to be shooting anything bigger then Moose here in N.B. Might venture over to Newfoundland to shoot one but that would be it. Unless someone wants to send me off on a hunting trip ;)

.303 has probably killed more moose in NB than any other round, but the .308 would be second.

As for the NL moose they are no bigger, since that strain originated from Miramichi NB

I use a 180 gr .303 at 2450fps. or a 180 gr 7.62x54r at 2640fps. The .308 has no problem dropping moose out to 300 yards with a good shooter behind it.

I have shot a number of moose in New Brunswick (in the Saint John area). They are quite small compared to moose in other places.

The 308 is plenty powerful enough for those little critters. I suggest any 180 soft point ammo you can buy. Aim just behind the shoulder and you have a classic boiler room shot that will have it dead within 50 yards.

The 308 Winchester is a great choice and will take down a moose. The 308 has an inheritance of accuracy and a pedigree of factory and reloaded ammunition.

Can it do it yep can it fail yep I know 1 hunter shot a elk with a 308 win 9 times 8 in the neck 1 in the body It just wouldn't drop. I asked what ammo he used it was 180 Winchester silver tip ammo. I said that's the problem the ammo not the gun some people have had problems with them not expanding like they're supposed to so they went through like a full metal jacket ammo. (I had problems with Winchester ammo and americain eagle ammo) With Winchester some of them wouldn't expand might of been because they were old and the lead hardened. The Americain eagle would go bang then poof (really weak load) so it had problems in some firearms.

Looking into buying a .308 hunting rifle for big game. Probably be using it for whitetail and moose here in New Brunswick. Just curious as to if a .308 is capable of dropping a moose out here. Won't be taking any crazy long shots, only what I felt comfortable with.

just stabbing at a wild guess here, I'd hafta say most definitely!:p The 308 is a might fine cartridge and one of my fav's.

Grab an M305/M14s, drill out the rivet and load her up with 20 rounds. Just keep shooting until it doesn't move any more.... :)

Seriously though do your part, and the .308 will do the rest.

p.s. throw some tracers in there to help you acquire the target...

the 308 will do it, but as many say, only if the shooter can do it, too........................, it may be a team effort out there. Are they monsters? My mouth waters so, for the deep dark red moose meat, haven't had any for years! I have never seen eastern Canada, would you share a Moose T-bone steak if I was to make it out to New Brunswick?
