Is 32 cal revolver prohib? I have a chance to buy one from an estate sale and they said they had the cops look at it and tell them it wasn't prohib and could be sold. Well, we know how much water that would hold if I got stopped at the range, all they probably did was measure the barrel. I heard someone say the caliber in a handgun was prohib. Yes? No?
 
If it is a .32 centre fire, it is prohibited. Recently I saw a Smith & Wesson .32 rimfire for sale. (Apparently it was one of S&W's first commercial line, released in 1858.) That gun was restricted only.
 
Yea that's what I thought. Oh well, I'll tell them to call Del Selin. They will probably take it. Next question. Can someone give me something to print off and show them?

A pre-1898 .32 rimfire is antique, and not subject to registration. It is neither restricted nor prohibited. If it is registered in error, it can be deleted from the registry.

6. A handgun manufactured before 1898 that is capable of discharging only rim-fire cartridges, other than 22 Calibre Short, 22 Calibre Long or 22 Calibre Long Rifle cartridges.

7. A handgun manufactured before 1898 that is capable of discharging centre-fire cartridges, other than a handgun designed or adapted to discharge 32 Short Colt, 32 Long Colt, 32 Smith and Wesson, 32 Smith and Wesson Long, 32-20 Winchester, 38 Smith and Wesson, 38 Short Colt, 38 Long Colt, 38-40 Winchester, 44-40 Winchester, or 45 Colt cartridges
 
"Prohibited firearm means

(a) a handgun that

(i)has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or

(ii)is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge.

but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union"

There are European cartridges not identified as .32 that are not prohibited, but unless you have 12-6, are a ISU shooter if it is .32 centrefire you are SOL
 
As far as 32 goes I know rim is OK, you can buy them at gun shows for peanuts as long as they are pre 1890s.

Not sure on this target rule I am interested so I will confirm and repost.
 
A .32 is an illegal gun that fires a projectile that is .312" diameter.

A 7.62x25 is a legal firearm that shoots a projectile that is, or should be, .312" diameter.

The difference is that the illegal one is an older American gun that people might use to defend themselves when their homes are invaded, while the more expensive, and legal, Soviet model was designed for doing the invading.

Does any of this make sense?

"...Is it exempt by name?..." Only the GSP and OSP. Both being high end target pistols.
"...they said...the cops look at it..." That means nothing. Only revolvers chambered in the calibres Rudy H listed are exempt from registration. What's the make and model?
 
There is a whole long list of .32 S&W Long target pistols that are exempt because they are used in International target competition. I own a Hammerli SP-20, as one example. The list specifies manufacturer and model and is revised as new models come on the market. These are high-end target pistols, usually in the $2,000+ range.

When they went to ban all .32 centrefire pistols, it was pointed out that this would really put a crimp in our Olympic and other bullseye shooting sports, since they all used .32! So they put together the list of exempted guns.
