Is a .375 H & H too much cartridge for moose

I will be using a 375 H&H for moose this year. I have shot a fair number of moose with the 30-06, .303 and have never found those calibers wanting. I bought the 375 because I am planning Africa and what better way to to become familiar with a rifle than by hunting with it.

Great gun. You can never have too much gun for a moose. The 375 H&H Mag will shoot it through a tree if necessary. One of the best trajectories of the "Big Guns".

In a word, no, one of the all time classics!
best all around rifle I've used, moose or deer, the old saying, which doesn't apply to many cartridges was,"eat right up to the hole".

shoot 'em through the lungs, and be quiet, no hootin' and hollering (that's what gets moose moving fast to somewhere else, not the shot). Deer are spooky to begin with so normally leave when shot.
Only, moose I've seen trying to run off, personal experience or watching dvds, are the ones that 'bonehead' starts celebrating, or a partner or guide yells to him to 'hit 'em again!!!!'.

The only thing about it is the weight of the gun, if that's not an issue, you're making a great choice.

I handloaded mine with 300 grain Sierra spitzer and used IMR 3031, don't have the load data in front of me, so not going to guess.

My main rifle was a Remington 700 XCR chambered in 300WM topped with a Leupold 3.5X10.

I wanted a new rifle and my dad always said "if you're going to buy a new rifle get something different. I thought a 338 doesn't do much more than my 300WM can so I stepped up to a 375H&H and it was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I only bought it last year but this year our group got a moose tag so it will be my primary choice this year. I'm taking the scope off the 375 that's on their now and will be replacing it with my Leupold.

Personally, and I'm not that big of a guy (6' 185lbs) I find felt recoil to be great. Not the same kick as a 300WM at all. It's more of a shove than a sharp snap. Kinda like shooting a 12ga with a slug. I wanted the CLASSIC cartridge over the new fandangled ones and ended up with a CZ550.

Fully loaded with the sling and scope I'm right around 10lbs or so. I don't think it's all that terrible.

So ya.......GET ONE!!!!!!

I got a .375 H&H barrel for my Encore, and fell in love with the cartridge. It's turning into

.22 LR
.223 Rem
.270 Win
(.30-06 Sprg)
.375 H&H

as a hunting rifle set. The .270 and the .30-06 are because I can't not have a .30-06. :D If you forced me to choose I would go .270. Leaves each cartridge in a sweet spot with 40 grain, 55 grain, 130 grain and 270 grain bullets, all doing a great job on their own turf while leaving some space for the others.
 
ruger no 1 in 375 would be in my safe in a minute or less,super cartridge,perfect for anything.shot coyotes to bears with the one i HAD! BUT SOLD IT LIKE A IDIOT AND BEEN REGRETTING IT EVER SINCE!(LOL)
 
Shot my last moose with my Sako 75 - a few years ago now but it worked perfect (285 gr Grand Slams). Hopefully I get another chance to use it.
 
I used Ruger Tropical 375 years ago. It is the one rifle I still kick myself for selling. You will be very happy with it if you are ok with a little recoil. The 270 spitzers are deadly and the Partition is the one I used on moose. The 375 winchester FN would make a dandy deer if loaded easy.

I found with my Ruger I could reload just about as quick as a bolt and they are fine handling rifles.
 
A 375 is not too much for moose but it may be too much for hunters. I had a LH mdl 70 Lh in 375 and it was over 19# scoped so I got a lh ruger and at 7/34# plus scope it is still heavy for me when I want to walk. I'm over 65 with 2 artificial knees. They have shown no increase in killing power on moose for me than thr 350 rem 35 whelan 338win 300 win or even the 7RM. As a matter of fact the moose that have been dumped in their tracks were taken with 270 (Abou4) 6.5 x284 (4 more and they were dead before they hit the ground 7 mmRm (numerous)300 ultra mag (3) and 350 Rem (2). These were animals dropped on the spot and none were with Barnes Bullets.

I had a sako 75 in 375 h&h that was excellent. I killed two deer a one black bear with it and even my wife shot a deer with it. I used full power 270gr tax loads and while it does give you a push i'll much rather shoot 20 rounds of those than 20 rounds of my 300 ultra loads. The ultra weighs even weighs more but the damn thing comes back so fast and just smacks you hard. 208 amax @ 3100.

Buy a 375 it's a grat caliber with 30/06 ballistics. Can't go wrong.
 
Here in Alaska the 375 has taken its fair share of Moose. I dont have one although I once had a Brno ZKK602 in 375 but I had it rechambered to the 338 Lapua Improved. Wish I still had it. Get the 375 and enjoy it.
 
nah, I used mine on gophers a few times. the guys I was shooting with didn't appreciate it, as I didn't warn them as to what I was using before I fired.
 
thread revived...my late 2 cents at the table...must be a 375 addict? (yup)

...i was 18 and had a 7mm rm and one of the nicest looking whitetail bucks i would ever see was walking away from me, head down at 100 yards...any more i'd spine him, but back then i was just frustrated to hell watching that rack walk away in heavy cover...and i held that grudge for 20 years...

...enter moving to the plains in my late 30's to work and a gun shop that had a ruger 1 tropical in 375 h+h on the shelf...i had never seen such a beautiful rifle within my price range...traded a ruger 1 300 wm for it...worked up a load, 270 gr barnes x at just over 2000 fps and went looking for a victim...shot him in the rear left flank as he was walking away and it exited his front right brisket at 100 yards...he got real sick very quickly...and the bullet even tore up 15' of frozen soil down to 4" deep and then continued down the valley after that...and there was much less meat damage than with my 300 wm or the 7mm rm's...and i haven't looked back since...

...if you're gonna shoot him in the a** with a 30-30, then no it's not enough cartridge...if you can shoot him in the neck or brain, then use a .223...but a loaded up semi-solid in a .375 diameter or bigger will handle a moss at any angle...lotta guys just can't figure out what hunting is all about when it comes to actually procuring your food for the year and what it takes to do so...

...i've done my research in the field for 40 years in the bush...and old timers knew these facts...a .375 h+h isn't too much to shoot for anyone who can handle a 30-06...it's not like a weatherby or even a .338...it's just a whole lot of push that keeps coming at you...standing up it's a walk in the park...bench resting i always use a sissy bag...because who cares?
