Is a .45 too much?

I always wanted a 1911 in 45 as well, a stainless one, so I bought a sr1911.
It's a pleasure to shoot, makes me smile every time. Plan on trying some ipsc with it this fall(for the fun of it).
45 is about $50/100rds local. Not bad, I only go through about a 100rds/week when I don't sleep in past the local competitions...
$50 ain't much for the weekly fun. And it's only till I start reloading the round.

Never bothered with a .22 handgun. I did have a 9mm 1911 for a short time, can't see another 9mm in my future.
 
At around $35 a box for pretty much any .45acp ammo, I just don't shoot mine as often as I would like. It is still my favorite round to shoot, and I always make time to shoot it when at the range, but I never take it to the range without a 9mm and a couple of .22 handguns. .45acp is the bain of married men who have money controlling wives!!!
 
Getting a .22 as a first handgun is like putting training wheels on a bicycle. You grow out of them very quickly and they really weren't necessary in the first place.

The .45ACP and the 1911 were literally made for each other. The anemic "tink, tink" of the 9mm on the steel plates cannot compare to the "CLANG" of 230 grains of .45ACP goodness. If money is a concern shoot less. Shooting 50 rounds of .45ACP is far more satisfying 100 rounds of 9mm. YMMV.
 
The answer is: it depends on you, the shooter.

Some folks can handle a .45 with no issues. Some develop a "flinch" response from the recoil - resulting in a trigger control issue that's hard to rectify.

And while I agree that the 1911 was built for the .45 ACP, it has been successfully adapted to shoot other calibers for years. A 1911 chambered in 9mm is probably my favourite pistol/caliber combination. Accurate, reliable, fast, and very little recoil.

Dont know if i would be owning handguns if the 45/44 and 357 werent available, other calibers are for me less interresting... JP.
 
Get the 45. I wish I had (beretta 9mm was my first). I really enjoy shooting the 45 way more than 9. Costs be damned! Recoil seems less 'snappy' than 9mm and the bullets look nicer!
 
If I could I would shoot nothing but .44 magnum but cost is the limiting factor. I wouldn't say 45acp is too much recoil wise but it may wear on your pocketbook
 
I shoot .45 mainly. It's satisfying to put those big ol' 230 gr on steel. Would I recommend it as a first? No, I'd recommend a .22. .45 is expensive, and recoils enough that it is difficult to learn how to shoot quickly if you have no significant handgun experience.

If the cost isn't a concern, then just buy the gun you want.

You can never really make a choice like this based on someone else's opinion.

If you don't like the gun you can sell it on the exchange pretty fast.

It is one of the most desirable COLT 1911's because it does not have the extra firing pin safety.

My first pistol was a .22 magnum. My second was a 1911 in .45. .45 is easy to get into. It's not a tough caliber at all to manage. Everyone who shoots my 1911 likes it and is good with it immediately.

it has the Colt "cache", but quality-wise, you can do better for the money. STI and Dan Wesson would be better choices in that price range.

I feel you brother. In my case, I blame Captain America (and other) comic books in the '70's, early '80's. If there was a Nazi within range, he fell due to the Government 1911. :)

There are pics of me at about 7 or 8 years old with cap gun side arm...loved it. :p
