Is a 45 yard range worth anything for sighting in?

Looking to buy a 223 or 308 (still desiding) but the range I am a member of only has a 45 yard rifle bay.
thats not far at all, but for the time being its all I got.

Can I use that to zero even thought I want my 0 to be 150 or 200?

Use an external ballistics program (use Google to do a search). If your line of sight is 1.5" above centre of bore, a typical 55 gr load hitting the bull at 45 yd would be about 3/4" high at 100. This would be easy to fine tune once you got out somewhere with some more space, a 45 yd zero would bring you on around 160 yd. This is not the important part; once the scope is true to the bore, and the left/right adjustment set it takes only a few shots to bring it onto target.

Whe sighting in rifles, we often use clay pigeons at 200yd or so. The bullet stril\kes aren't hard to spot and viola!

In theory you can sight in at 45 yrds for a 100, 200 ... 1000 yrd zero. However this will never replace actual zeroing at the range you require, plus you will want to physically shoot at various ranges to know exactly how your rifle/ammo combination will perform. I have spent almost a year collecting data for ranges 0 - 1300 for one of my newer HB's and I'm still not done. Spend the $50 and get a membership at Genese Gun Range by Wabamun, 45 min drive and 700m range. Great range for a .308... and if you sell that pistol you could get a sweet long range rifle package.

is wabamum the closest range for a distance of 500 yards and in?

I think I might see if the gun shop will trade me the pistol for a rifle tonight.

I did a search for ballistic calculator and came up with lots :)
thanks, now I just have to figure out what the rest of everything means :)

The best and least expensive, and the closest I know of. Spruce Grove is closer but is $107/yr and only 300m. Plus some of the members are unfriendly to the black rifle crowd so I've boycotted them, I was a member there for about 10 years. Lock and Load sells the memberships to Genesee.

Don't really want to get into it, its just an opinion and if you like the grove thats cool. Lets just say they were a little too conservative for my tastes and I feel more welcome at CHAS.

How long of a drive would the spruce grove range be from like calgary trail and whitemud crossing?

I cant seem to find the ballistics chart on remington.

for the ballistics chart do most people print off something to carry with?

About 45 minutes. Join Genesee, you'll like it a lot better. SG range has a history of being non-black gun friendly. - dan

when you say black gun I assume you mean a gun that wont be used for hunting?

But how do you mean non friendly? will I still be able to go and shoot? and they jsut wont talk to me? cause I wouldnt mind that sometimes, lol.

Genesse? is the the wabamum one?

Depending on who is there. Some look at you and your gear like your a criminal or they label you a hazard because your rifle goes bang just by squeezing the trigger. You will have no real problems if you are with another member and follow the rules like a convict in prison. I don't think you can shoot there except as a member, guest of a member, during a schedualed event or some summer/fall weekends (actual range officer present), plus I think they charge over $10 now for a guest day pass. They are extremely sticky. You will enjoy the people at Genesse 100% more and will learn alot. Yes the range is south east of Wabamun. Get a membership, best money you will spend.
