is a 6x42 scope to much for hunting

I'm trying to sell a 3-9x scope that is really quite nice, for the reason that I can't see ever needing that much magnification in the hunting I do. I think 6x is certainly enough, but it might be a bit much sometimes. I like fixed scope to be 4x because it seems to me I won't want more power as often as a 6x may make me wish for a bit less.

A 6x scope is definitely not too much for general hunting purposes. A rifle that fits properly and practising good cheek weld is paramount for close/running shots, regardless of magnification.
big game hunting i have fixed 4 and fixed 6 power scopes. i have made shots on paper out to 300yrds. i have a 7-21 on my wmr for target shooting. but i shoot 12g shells at 100yrds. its all relivant to size of your target and distances you hunt at. with the 7-21 on my 30-06 i could make 5-600 yrd shots but the places i hunt i might get a 300yrd shot in a clearcut once in a blue moon
my eye sight is getting worst as I get older miss the old hunting day's wen I never needed a scope to hunt
I have a few 4X and 6X Leopolds that I picked up used over the years and I believe that for most hunting, I prefer the 6X. I have a 6X mounted on a .270, .300 H&H and even a .223 Ackley sporter. Initially I was concerned about close encounters but they have never been a problem. My other favorite would be a 3X Leopold for something like a .300 Savage. They tend to be fairly light and dead reliable.
