Is a gut hook just a gimmic, or useful

i have a gut hook on my skining knive and have anothr knive for ctting and boning i realy like it i think it is the gerber model works very well DUTCH

As for the deer azz....

after doing a few deer with it, the guys thought it was great.

I bet they did.

A gut hook works great on skinning bears that is the only time i use it

a ziptie works just as well

Better than the a** puller is a trick I was shown where you saw or axe out the centre of the pelvis leave the anus in place cut the esophagus and just pull the whole tract our of the animal and once removed and laying on the round, cut the anus out. I will never use another method and no extra stuff to have to pack (providing you're carrying an axe or saw anyway).

As for the gut hook I can take it or leave it.
