Is a Harris bipod REALLY worth the extra money?

I have my flame suit on and am ready for a nuclear holocaust... but I really do not see the point in spending a ridiculous amount of money on a Harris bipod when a 40 dollar one from Bass pro functions just as well. What does a Harris bipod do that a cheaper one does not? I cant see it affecting accuracy so why dish out the cash? I personally have never broken a cheaper one and its been on everything from .17 hmr to 30-06 without a single complaint. Not trying to put down your decision I just want to understand, enlighten me please.

I use the cheaper bipods also...never a failure nor complaint either. My bipods see the dirt and grit of the gopher fields and with many thousands of rounds going thru the barrel they support. The extra monies spent on a "name brand" bipod can be better spent on a scope upgrade or ammo replenishment. I use them for fields and bench shooting on guns of .22 thru 45-70 caliber. I never baby them , they are there for a purpose and see their use. I have gotten many thru CGN as used product and have no complaints .

A King Canada drill is 1/8 the price of a Dewalt. They both drill holes so whats the big deal?

Use it and find out for yourself. :p

And there you have it, the yellow Chinese Black and Decker will not out perform the King Canada.
Black and Decker making there tools yellow will only fool some people..

I lent my harris bipod to a friend for a couple of days. when it came back the thumb screw and claw assembly were missing that are used to attach the bipod to the rifles sling swivel. Getting blank looks from him when i asked about it, i phoned up Harris (took some time to get the correct number) and talked to a nice lady there. After explaining that i lost the parts and it was my fault and would be happy to pay, she said not to worry about it and sent what i needed free of charge. I am ok with paying a little more for no reason.

I think they are. My personal experience is that the leg springs are stiffer, things like the pivot point (if you have a swivel pod) tighten up better and I think Harris is the only company (AFAIK) that makes a pod with leg notches.

Dont get me wrong, I usually pay more for a better known brand, but you might have just gotten lucky and got a nice person or she woke up on the right side of the bed. Theres a huge possibility that chance was involved, but with big corporations like Bass Pro I have never been denied a return, these big stores get this stuff so cheap they dont really care if customers are lying to return a 40 dollar item. Just saying even if I have had problems with cheaper bipods (which I have not) I would just return it for a new one.

I hate mine. I use my pack these days in the bush to support the rifle and a proper rest on a bench at the range. I find that the bi-pod actually makes the stock contact the barrel becuase its so far forward, taking away freefloat.(this is a cheap houge stock with a heavy barrelled rem 700) I think both types are junk...and watch for fingers when you release the extended arm.(it hurts)

I have several Harris bipods and find the quality better than the cheaper knock offs.. I also have a Sako bipod for my TRG 22 that cost $400 so in the grand scheme of things a Harris is not that expensive.

Are you kidding me? The difference in quality between a Harris and a Rock or other knock offs is insulting. The knock offs are literally garbage and a rip off in comparison. Not even close to the same quality, not en close.

I bought a Rock when my Harris was missing and took it back after one trip to the range. I couldn't tighten it enough without it loosening and wobbling around. The legs were not stiff enough to keep the gun still. The base is weak material on the pretend bi pods and are weak and shift.

I took it back regardless, no looking back.

If the cheap ones work for you and you cant tell the difference then use them. Personally I found the harris and rock mount junk and am now on to using Atlas. Even my versa pod was too flimsy. The new gen is a little better.

Depends whether you appreciate the little things, like having it sit straight on the stock when you tighten it down, or the rubber pad the protects the stock remain position. Keep an eye on the EE. You may find a used Harris for $20 more than a knock off.

They are both the same design, its the sloppy execution of the design, and selection of inferior materials that makes the knock offs not as good. I have a couple of the chinese knock off's I bought on ebay, and they are certainly usable, they just don't compare to the two Harris's I also own. Whether you like the Harris design though, is a whole 'nother subject. Obviously some don't and there's other designs that have their following.

I have Parker Hale, Versa, Harris. Much prefer the Harris.
Don't even bother with one that isn't swivel.

I have tried my dads harris and against other bipods ive used they deem to me to dampedn vibrations and shakes from recoil. and they also seem to be mor stable the farther you extend them.
And yes compared to the specific bipods like the one for the new SAKO TRG models it is a fraction of the cost, I think my biddy paid even more for his...something like 650

I have had both the Harris and the knock offs, they are almost the same except like mentioned above everything is just a little cheaper on the knock off. You can always modify either of them from Coretac in Missasuaga, it now has a larger attachment screw, a swivel ratchet system, a Phoenix foot adapter and feet, it's now twice as much but twice as good no joking. With that said I am currently looking for something lighter and better, I also found that buying the lesser of the two will have you going back for the other one in the end anyways. So yes I think for the extra cash it's well worth extra quality, but they do do the same thing.

How much are the harris in Canada? I got my benchrest swivel model from the states for just under $110 to my door. http://triadtactical.com/?mainURL=/store/category/e54s/Bipods_etc.html

About $120 at Coretac which is a fairly standard price, but they have all the other goodies.

I have at least 6 Harris bipods, and upon checking, 5 are on rifles right now.
Harris Bipods are the best. Cheaper oats can be had but they have been through the horse once!
