After an incident last year with my high end rifle I use to loan people I have decided I need a decent rifle but much cheaper to lend out. I was going to pick up a Ruger american for $499 but then all these Tikka sales came on and I am wondering if it's $200 better at $699. I want a decent rifle as it will still be mine but don't want to cringe when it gets banged around.

Geez, I didn't think you could get either one today for the prices you stated. Regardless, if you can find the tikka for only 2 bills more than the Ruger, buy the tikka. The American is a good deal at original pricing of approx $449 but, at current pricing, there are much better.

Tikka T3 are on sale because the new T3X is coming out. Nothing of real significance has changed and the T3 is a nice well built rifle. I would take one without hesitation over the Ruger American.

I have 2 and trying to find a 3rd but being left handed sucks. Tikkas rock for the price.

There's really no comparison. However, in fairness, the Ruger American is still a good, reliable rifle.
Tikka: Finnish ordnance-grade steel receiver, Sako cold hammer forged barrel, one of the best factory triggers around, and even the synthetic stock is one of the better ones in its class. Bolt throw is as smooth as silk and the magazines are virtually indestructible (just don't lose one--they're expensive to replace). Oh and sub-MOA out-of-the-box. Yep, really no comparison. :) I would love another Sporter in 6.5x55.

There are also some of those flame vanguards on the ee nib. While I prefer my tikka the vanguard isn't a bad rifle. And with the flamer stock you won't care if it gets banged around.
