Is an 18inch barrel to short for trap and skeet?

I was just thinking of posting the same question! this has been the only thing holding me back from getting an 18.5" barrel as my 1st shotgun

It didn't work well for me with an M2 tactical (no choke). 3 or 4 out of 10, if that. As soon as I picked up a Ruger O/U it was 9/10 all day long.

i did some skeet shooting with my Moss 590's last summer think they have a 18 or 20" barrel cant remember, they did just fine though range was limited to about maybe 75yrds if i remember, still worked beyond that just not to good...

Shot trap with my 20" 590A1 to great effect. Nothing like a little "Tactical Trap"; be sure to remove the bayonet first. Gets a giggle from the Krieghoff crowd:D

Good advice. Thanks

What..... speak up eh! :D

Short barrels are louder for sure but I doubt they are twice as loud. I just get a chuckle everytime I read someone's post about how loud a shorter barrel. It's not like the long ones are quiet eh!

I shoot a 18.5" barreled cyl choked mossy in skeet and get 21-23 with it. Its loud and I get stares cuz it has dual pistol grip side saddles and a heat shield. I have fun. Trap with it sucks but I only shoot 7/8oz loads. If I shoot quick I can break 16s all day. Its the best way to piss off hardcore trap shooters.
Nah, the best way to piss off trap shooters is to steal their beer.

Which club are you shooting at? I frequently read on the Internet about the tacticool guys who claim they are hot s**t and all with their badass "shotties." I don't see if very often in real life but then everyone shoots better at the keyboard.

A short-barreled, Open Cylinder would be much better suited to skeet than trap. Your practical disadvantages really are only the short barrel. You will really have to focus on your swing and follow-through. And it will be MUCH louder than other guns.

Too true, I never see tactical shotguns at my club, I've tried someones coach gun once, so whippy, you end up way ahead of the target, then your slowing down to let the target catch up and then you stop the gun and miss for all your effort. :HR:

LOL win/64 for your "Good to have a goal in life" comment

I'd challenge anyone on here with their tacticool shotguns, to a round of skeet and a round of trap, I'll use my great grandfathers lefever SxS choked cyl and super full. Best score out of 50 wins a case of beer of the winner's choosing.

So come on, lets play ;)

haha seems like the only thing that gets shot off most of the time are mouths hahaha and i aswell enjoyed Win/64 comment about having a goal

I never tried it but an acquaintance of mine apparently won the day with a 590a1. That being said from what i've seen the kid is a hell of a shooter with any gun so i'm not surprised.

I shoot a Beretta 680s O/U and it has a 26in barrel with both barrels being skeet barrels no removable chokes. I shoot between 19 and 22 a game of skeet and have been shooting for about 5 months.(I don't shoot trap) This is at a skeet and trap shooting club with regulation setup and remote throwers. I assume this is what you are referring to and not just a hand thrower in a field.

A good fit is the most import thing in skeet and trap shooting along with good old fashion practices. You are not going to shoot a 16 with your 28in barrel and a 22 with a 30in barrel. It just wont have that much effect. You will have to get really good before you notice a difference of a few inches on a barrel.

Get out there and start shooting. Trigger time will affect your scores way more than anything ells. You may want a O/U or semi as a pump can be a bit of work for doubles.

Ill take that bet for skeet shooting gwagon. Whether I win or loose ill have a blast. Trap is hard with a short barrel and cyl chocke. Skeet the perceived lead is huge with a short barrel. But a good day I can break 17 with my pump and a 4x full custom choke on the skeet field. I'm at kent cloverleaf conservation club every sunday

I'm glad someone finally took up my challenge, one problem though, I'm about 6 1/2 hours away, and thats not worth driving for a case of beer or even worse to loose a case of beer.

Instead if you are still interested in this challenge, we will have to do some sort of postal challenge on the honor system.

You go to your club this weekend and I will to mine and shoot a round of each and post your score here. Best score wins of course.

The looser would EMT the value of a case to the winner??? or mail a gift card???

Of course we would both have to be honest about of scores. I'll post mine first and you second since this is my idea.

Perhaps we could shoot one practice round and then the next round counts or first round counts, your choice.

Let me know!!!

I will play middle man and hang on to the Beer until a winner is declared. :)
You can trust me.

Could I switch back to my 28" full choke for the trap side haha it'll still have a heat sheild and all the other stuff on it lol. 6.5 hours where you at? I don't know what EMT is tho but I'm honest enuf that I'd send a giftcard. I'd rather shoot sxs with ya so I could see ur face when I get those station 4 crossers with my mitey 7/8s oz loads tho lol
