Is an off-centre M14 front sight post a defect?

I have two rifles, one which is going to my brother, the other to sell. One came from the factory with the adjustable front sight post way to the right, the other is slightly to the left, as opposed to dead centre. Neither has been fired yet so we can't tell what adjustment to make, if necessary, and we're trying to keep one in the grease. My brother wants to sell the "best" one and keep and fix up the "inferior" one. He doesn't like the fact that the front sight posts on either one are off-centre. Is that a manufacturing defect? If the rifle requires the front sight to be off-centre, is it something that you can take to a gunsmith and they will fix it?

I have seen a few Norcs with the front sight way over to one side or another. My own was pushed way to the right. I have handled a few in different gunshops all of which had the sights off center. I pulled my action out of the wood and clamped on two steel rulers a la Hungary's clinic on barrel indexing and the barrel seems to be fine. I plan to take the piece to the range this weekend to sight it in which will confirm if it is just the front sight mounted off center.
I have the impression that this is a common problem with the Norcs as there are reports of the grub screw on the front sight being so loose that the sight could be moved by finger pressure alone.

like tenexx said, check the barrel indexing.as far as which rifle is the better of the two,how can you tell if you haven't fired either?sometimes i think some people place too much value on [IN THE GREASE] i would be far more interested in which one shoots better groups, but, to each his own i guess.

I had the same problem...believe it or not it wasnt indexing, but a screwy front sight assembly. When I replaced it with a vortex everything lined up just fine.
