Well after playing with the crappy Sierra .358" 200 grain bullet in my Winchester 94 XTR in .356, i tried my hand at selling it. After getting some silly trade offers and what not, i took it off the board and decided to play with it some more. I aquired some Speer 180 grainers and 220 grainers and tried some loads. I managed 2710fps with the 180 grainers and 2420fps with the 220 grainers all with respectable accuracy and no pressure signs!!! This little Winchester is definitely a 250 yard moose and elk capable rifle with these loads. Its definitely staying put and we'll see what happens come elk season.

..............anyone else have experience with this .35 cal???

Your in a pretty small club there Win94 ;) I almost snagged a 356 a few years back but...

As you probably know its the twin of the 358win albeit with a bit less bullet choice. I see Hornady has 35 cal 250gr round noses. I don't know for sure if these are tube mag ready, many other Hornady rns are. That would be an awsome little package in your rifle

.356

I love my Marlin, just blasted a couple rounds off the porch to try it. Weather has turned very nice, I will get into a little shooting this weekend.

Arch:)

I killed a calf moose at exactly 250 paces with mine three years ago. Speer 220, @ 2400fps. Killed two whitetails, a doe and a nice buck at 8-10 yds with the 250 gr. win factory load a few years ago. I was standing on a trial, they both came by real close. I had two tags, and two shots later they were in the bag. Killed a bull elk from a tree stand this year (with the 250 factory ld again ) at less than 20 yds, facing shot, broke the neck and took out part of one lung. A buddy borrowed the rifle afew years a go and with a 200 gr. factory load shot a calf elk. Every one was a clean kill. I like my .356! I don't think you need any other bullet besides the Speer 220. It seems very well balanced for this cartridge.

I can't see much getting away under 250 yards using that 220 grainer at 2400 fps. I was awfully impressed with a 180 grainer at 2700 fps though outta that stubby little case!!

the 356 has struck me as an excellent cartridge for most hunting, especially black bears. In a nice compact lever rifle, it is an alternative to the 45/70, with a bit more reach and still lots of thump with a 220 grainer :shotgun:

did Marlin make rifles in 356?? or was it only the Model 94 big bore?

I have a 94 in 356 and will never part with it. I haven't done much hunting with it, mostly taking it on camping/fishing trips, since it is so handy and nice to carry. I used it to kill a hungry, young cougar that was about to pounce on my nine year old son, on one such trip. I also shot an island black-tail with it. I've taken the scope off and installed a new england peep sight and I'm thinking seriously about using it on a late season moose and mule deer hunt next November. I use the 250 grain Winchester factory loads cuz I got a good deal on 5 boxes, from a shop that was selling out, and they work really well in that rifle. I also have a 35 whelen and am thinking about having my 338 re-barrelled to 358 Norma.

I also bought a 94 in .356 recently as a present for my grandson. I certainly agree with you that it is a 250 yard big game thumper. I have had to re-evaluate my Canopener Theory since this aquisition.:bangHead:
I am still not sending you a Valentine....:slap:

.................Yes Tod Marlin made a 336er. Less than 2000 i believe. I believe Arch1965 just snagged one.

Some years ago I had a model 94 in 356 Win.I only shot the 200 gr factory loads which gave me about 4" groups at 100 yds.I shot 1 buck with it at 25yds.Bullet went through the nearside ribs, destroyed the lungs, went out the offside ribs and broke the offside leg.Outstanding performance! The deer didn't know what hit him & dropped where he stood.I wish I had kept the rifle but I foolishly traded it off for something else I no longer own.Good luck with yours Win94.

The above statement is correct :dancingbanana: I think the total Marlin
336ER's made was 2400. She is a beauty !!!

Shhhhhh. Don't get arch all excited here. I am trying to work him for this rifle but so far he refuses to budge and worse wants my Marlin in 375 Winchester :kickInTheNuts: I need to bide my time and get him in a relaxed hypnotic state whence I will pounce with cash and hand and the 356 will be mine

It makes me ill to even think about letting go of my 336ER. I can say without a doubt..........it's not going to happen. Salty, you may as well sell me your Marlin 375, just take the cash....or.... I'll trade you a Win 94 375 and a minty Browning BL .22 for your Marlin. PM me if your are inclined.

Pee my pants?, darn rights, I think there may have been a number 2 in there as well.:D

MHUNT Jr. is in my will.

Back to arch; the 375 seems to have welded itself to the inside of the gunlocker  If I can figure out how to safely remove it I'll get back to you on your kind offer
