Is barnaul hunting ammo for the SKS steel core or just steel case?

Picked up a bunch of BARNAUL 7.62x39 FML ammo, split a case with a friend who told me it was not steel ammo... so we could take it to the range (where all milsurp ammo is banned).

It's non corrosive primer, modern manufacture hunting rounds... all it says on the box is 123gr, FMJ, Noncorrosive, Lacquered steel case.

They get picked up by a magnet of course due to the case... anyone know if they're steel core or not?

I'll need to prove it to the range... maybe rip a round apart and toss the projectile on a magnet?
 
The hunting bullets should be lead core, the lead tip was exposed on the Barnaul ammo I bought. Wasn't steel cased either though.

*sorry I see you said FMJ in your post. NOT hunting ammo.
 
Strange, the box actually says hunting rounds on it, and FMJ.. those pesky russians?
Also, its steel core... probably just military ammo with a non corrosive primer in a different box. bought 500 rounds to play with.
 
There are huge differences between steel-CASED, steel-CORED, steel-JACKETED and ARMOUR-PIERCING ammo.

I have some 1944 Defence Industries .303 here with jackets which are attracted to a magnet. The CORES are 98.5% LEAD, 1.5% Antimony, with a 3-grain Aluminum insert. A magnet will attract the stuff, but the cores are about 2 steps harder than BUTTER.

Most steel-CORED ammo has the core of MILD steel or even of sintered iron. The Russians use steel CORES because it was the only way they could get a half-decent ballistic shape while copying the 123-grain slug of the StG-44.

AP ammo uses cores of specially HARDENED steel or even of other materials (including Tungsten). THIS WILL beat-up a range, but the others will not. Be sure your range knows the differences.

There is actully sporting, soft-point hunting ammo out there which has plated (very thin) mild-steel jackets because it is CHEAPER than gilding-metal.

BTW, a cupro-nickel jacket (as used in WWI .303 ammo) will be attracted by a magnet also. It contains 85% Copper and NO iron at all!

IRON is NOT the only material which is attracted by a magnet.
 
i was told by the range president that the steel CORE rounds cannot be cut by bolt cutters, but the photo i sent of my ammo cut in half with bolt cutters was plenty enough to satisfy him... even tho its magnetic.. its got a paper thin steel lining over the lead core.

and its non corrosive which is nice.

Yes. Even the SP Barnaul hunting ammo is magnetic. It is soft point expanding as well. Weird.
 
Ya know, the latest bee in my bonnet is whether shooting the steel jackets through my barrels is harder on them than copper jackets.

Thoughts please. MY thought is 'yes'. Apologies in advance for the thread 'jack.
