Is bore guide needed?

it's all marketing hype
my 30-06 barrel is supposed to be accurate about for 2000 rounds

if I shoot 20 rounds per trip (on average) it means I'll only clean it 100 times.

I really doubt an aluminum rod can do any damage during the life of the barrel. Even less with a plastic coated rod.
 
I use a Lucas Bore guide and it works well. Last one I got was 6 months ago so he must of just stopped shipping to Canada if he has?
 
Mike no longer ships to Canada. Thats too bad because his bore guides are top notch. I just got one for my AI rifle and it works much better than the AI rod guide. Its the insert that makes the difference.

In the end, they don't do much more than stop the patch from falling off, though some do protect from dribbleing solvent into the bedding to varying degrees. Thats exactly what I thought when I went to the store and checked out the dewey guide. The thing is such a big diameter that the cleaning rod would just bounce around in there and still hit the throat (maybee not as badly though)
SO I decided to build my own by taking a fireformed, neck sized case and epoxying it into a 1/2" brass pipe, and adding a handle.(it was a littlr trickier than it sounds) This allows me to have the sized case neck act as the guide, and this is as tight a guied as you could have and still have the jag fit through. It still may even hit the throat a little, but I figure it will just be the side of the jag glancing off it, rather than jamming hard into it. I also plan on putting in an insert near the rear of the guide (also slightly larger than the rod), so the rod will be lined up straight through the two openings. Still also need a couple wraps of tape around the outside of pipe so it will center in the reciever.

I also emailed about the Lucas bore guides to find they don't ship to Canada. Instead, I included a 223 family sinclair bore guide in my order from sinclair. I figure it'll be alright for when I use a nylon brush on the bore.

For patching, the gentlest method I've found is to use a patchworm (google it). It's a nylon string with a nylon cylinder at the end that supports the patch. To use it, add a patch, thread the string from the chamber through the bore, and pull it out through the muzzle.

Do you have to use the patches that come with the kit or will any patch do?

Where do you buy these?
 
last time i check most rods are slightly softer then STEEL.!! if you clean your barrel so much that you oval your barrel perhaps you oughta take a few days off the gym and purchase a cleaning rod that isn't made of carbide or hss

I think I ordered from them directly years and years ago. For patches I use Butch's triple twill shotgun patches (from lebaron) cut into the size I need.
