I have a savage .223 with a 1 - 9 twist barrell
Just starting to reload and have been given too good staring points points
70 grain berger vld's and 69 grain seirra
THe first ones to try wer bergers and powder is varget starting 22 to 24.8 with max load being 100.5% fill
Starting load for Seirra now. Varget suggest starting at 24 grains to 26C???/
If I start at start load will I not be Pretty much full for Varget?
Should I proceed Filling with seirra's??
Am I wrong to assume that full is full??? or am I wrong on volumn Numbers??

You can safely compress the powder slightly assuming you have followed procedure for SAFELY working up the load. The Bergers are also longer than the SMK's, leaving you less case capacity. So 100% full is not necessarily 100% for a different bullet.

HTank you wasn only plannin to go from 24 to 25 in 1/10 increase and go try em in the wind tommorow
(not hoping for wind just the forcast

Welcome to the Varget crunch club. Like shampoo that tingles, that crunching sound means the Varget is "working".

With a 69 gr bullet in a .223 I would lean towards 24.0 - 25.5 grains of Varget myself. Start low (23.5 grains) and work up.

There are plenty of high master high power shooters who use 24.0-24.5 of Varget with a 77 gr SMK in their AR-15s. It seems to be one of the standard loads down in Camp Perry.

Barrel length? Case type? Intended distance of the target? (IE. 1000 yds it still want to be sonic at the target if you want to hit your POI !!)

Sierra Manual for a 223 bolt with 24" barrel with a Federal case and a Rem 7 1/2 primer and a 80g HOB Match Sierra bullet using Varget is 21.7/2500 22.6/2600 23.5/2700 24.4/2800 25.3/2900

The longer the bullet, the less powder you can get in the case since the bullet will be occupying more the inside of the case. Go easy, start low and work up looking for pressure signs and once you see the signs, stop there, Pull the remaining ones from your test. Better this than locking up your action (creating pressure significant enough to drive your bolt lugs into the action's seating lug seating surface hard enough to damage both!)

One of first pressure signs I watch for is the ejector mark on the case head or primer cratering or a hard bolt lift. These are all signs of pressure. If you are not getting the velocity you need, you need a different powder. Fast powders burn faster and have the pressure curve earlier. Slower powders have the high point of the pressure curve later (taking millions of a second here...) I think from graphs I have seen done. The less the pressure, the longer your case life will be too. High pressure loads, you may get 1 or 2 firing on and they are trashed, no longer hold primer or leak, burning the bolt face. The higher the pressure, the less barrel life you get too. Pressure is bad period. Go easy and work up, all barrels are different!!!

New rifle maybe 350 bullets already down 24 " barrel
will be for 300 meters until 500 meter targets are up
using once fired (through this rifle) Winchester brass and winchester small rifle primers

Headdamage is right long drop tube, and don't full lenght resize, just the necks size die.
My varmint load is 27 "WORK UP SLOWLY CHECKING "with 55gr Nosler BT at 3420fps/26" barrel deadly on hogs & coyotes. If you use RL 15 or VT 540 with your 69gr sierra's you will gain a few fps and they shoot best in my gun at 300. I find the Berger 75gr VLD with max loads with RL 15 & Vt540 work the best out to 600, will try soon at 1000. my twist is 1/9. The best load I have seen is 80gr Sierra's and 540 & varget but gun is custom Hart barrel with long throat, under .75" at 300y 5 shot groups pretty amazing cartridge

got off 24.0 grains to 24.8 grains today
nothing but wind in my face conditions
going to try one of the loass again because they showed promise and 24.4
trickeled tenth grains for consisistancey
powder thrower just a little bit different everytime
lots of fun to see what a 1 \10 of varget powder looks like
should I keep fillin these cases till they bust or try another 50 of once fired before seconnd's??/
would trying out on 25 grains and up be a better use of time with the once twice??

I stopped using varget in the 223 and 308 for the compression reason, just a pain.

FWIW, I got way better results with H335 in the 223 and reloder 15 in the 308 so Varget is collecting dust in my basement.
