Is GP100 a good buy?

I have placed an order for a Ruger GP100 6 inch blued and while I have to wait about 3 WEEKS :mad: for the CFO to transfer the gun in my name (although another restricted gun I bought from P&D went through in about 10 days), I figured I can get some thoughts and assurances on the purchase.

Good or bad decision?

I'm partial to my 4" stainless version, but you have just bought a sturdy, reliable revolver.

Good decision. I would have gone for a stainless, but that's just me.

They are HIGHLY regarded in the revolver world. Sturdy, strong, accurate. Not the best triggers (not like an S&W), but not the cost of the S&W either.

I own a 686 - but if I would have found a stainless GP100 before that, I would have bought it.
 
GP 100 is one of the best revolver out there! It looks cool and the grip is very comfortable. You can always polish the trigger parts to light up the trigger pull or replace the main and return spring to make it a decent shooting iron. More information can go www.rugerforum.com

I had this revolver as my duty sidearm for about 4 years. I would compare it to a big pick up truck, not fancy, hard to park downtown, doesn't drive like Porsche, but....tough as nail. We were joking about the fact that this gun was closer to a hammer than a firearm...lol Seriously, it is a good duty revolver, but for plinking, the gun would really need a trigger job.

We had female officers who had difficulty pulling the trigger, some of them had to use their middle finger or both index...........i know, i know....

I have a stainless GP-100, they're great. Buddy of mine has a 686, I can't tell enough difference to make up for the cost of the 686 over the GP.

I take it you must be out east for a transfer to take 3 weeks? My wife bought an XD40 from P&D on Tuesday of this week, it arrived in the mail today. Less than 48 hours for the transfer to go through.
 
Short asnswer is yes (if you get a good one).

Longer answer is: Eyeball that mofo in the store before you take it home. I bought a GP100 not too long ago (brand new unopened box) and the crown was all messed up with deep tooling marks on it; also and inch down the bore from the muzzle had tooling marks across the rifling. The cylinder also had a timing issue with one of the chambers (the hammer would fall but the cylinder had not locked up.) It was a lemon. I traded it back at the very same place I bought it - I didn't want to deal with trying to get it fixed; some money lost and a lesson learned (check those Rugers thouroughly before taking them home).

Yes it just go back to why we want to support our local store, you can always detail exam your gun purchase and choose from several and get one you like. Especially Norinco gun. Of course every make has lemon too.

Ive got a six inch stainless ruger that i just picked up, its a very well made gun for the money. They just did a head to head comparison on the ruger vs. the 686 and guess what??? The ruger won hands down !!!! Great pick

General question:

Why stainless and not blue? I am sure there are pros and cons on both.

I had a GP100, I used it for IPSC, PPC and even metallic silhouette. The advantage for shooting silhouette, was that the cylinder was slightly longer than the S&W so that I didn't have to seat the 180 grn bullets quite so deep, leaving a little more room for powder, and I used a lot!
My usual plinking loads were a 125 grn bullet at 1650 fps and a 158 at 1350fps. The gun digested several thousand of these, with no timing or gas-cutting issues at all.
I could usually hit 2 bowling pins out of a cylinder full at 100 m.
I used the Millett blaze orange front sight and the white outline rear.
Despite the work and new springs and lots of use it never did have quite as good a trigger as a buddy's 586, tho' it did use the same size speedloaders.
