Is it 223 or 5.56?

Dude reload if you have that constraint. For $180 you could have bought most of a basic reloading setup! Even just pull the FMJ, reweigh the charge, and seat a good quality hunting bullet (VMAX or whatever).

Oh and I bought Norinco for $0.26/round so it's tough to beat! ;)

Would somebody PLEASE check the stickie on this very subject in Black and Green Rifles forum??

It will explain the differences in .223 Remington spec and 5.56 NATO spec ammo.

Who in Europe are you talking about that consider them interchangable? Random guys commenting on the internet or a Regulatory body or who exactly?

Just looked at some ammo boxes from Europe and they are labelled 5.56, with (223) in brackets. Its 5.56 ammo, with 5.56 specs yet labelled for 223 rifles. Pretty clear, that the ammo maker doesn't distinguish.

From what I, with my very limited knowledge of firearms and their components, can understand out of this is that 5.56 in a 223 chamber is Disaster sainting to happen. Her, the problem I have phoned Keltec And was told my gun is chambered 5.56 but stamped223 for export to Canada. Another post on here says he contacted Keltec and was told it was chambered 223. I know from the article you can buy a tool to tell which it is. The only .5.56 ammo I've seen is norinco and that appears to be nasty ammo. I've bought a few hundred rnds of 223 . So is this correct.....5.56 in 5.56 chamfer only and 223 in good in 5.56 and 223 chamber? I know 5.56 is not good in 223 chamber but I haven't seen to much info on the 223 in the 5.56 chamber.like I said two different answers from the manufacturer and until I can figure it out for myself ?

everyone can say what they like, they may get thousands of rounds of 5.56 through a .223 and be fine, but the rifle says chamber for .223, i also called keltec and talked to one of the smiths, not sure what his name was now... but he said they had to change the chamber for the canadian version to .223. plus if you put the two rounds next to each other you can physically see the height difference.. there is hardly any difference in price, i just prefer to play on the safe side lol.. check out this video its a good comparison! shoot safe all!

Hey art they told be the opposite , you say they change the barrels to 223 they told me they only stamp the barrels 223 for expo treason only but that they are chambered 5.56 Anyway found some cheap 223 ammo here 40 cents a rnd Russian made I believe zinc coated 62 g hunting rnds , just have to do a little research on them lol

Yes, .223 is safe to shoot in a 5.56 Nato. The inverse may cause problems.
Seen there is a difference in max chamber lenght (5.56 can tolerate more hadspace) it is better for you to check you cases after firing a .223, as if your chamber is "long", you may see case stretching signs. But usually the commercial 5.56 chambers are made to closer dimensions, to allow the use of .223 ammo in it.

If you want to have an IDEA of which chamber you get, then, take an empty case and an up side down bullet and check your leade lenght.
I mean, use the bullet base to check seating depth. If your chamber seems long throated, then, you should be OK shooting 5.56 ammo in it. If the throat is really short, then, you must have a .223 chamber...

Again in Europe they will mark .223 as 5.56 or 5.56x45 but that does not mean 5.56 Nato spec! They list in metric in Europe and 5.56x45 is their .223 Anything that's Nato spec would be labeled as such. 5.56 does not automatically mean 5.56 Nato!

True, although head stamp on ammo has nato circle with square. Same with a pile of American Eagle I purchased as 223. it was all nato marked, nato spec'd and nato ammo( confirmed through testing. Just saying its more of a big deal to some shooters than to the ammo makers, that's all.

Anyone have any idea where to get a leade/ throat gage. Checked brownells and the tech said they don't sell it. I've checked the net and can't seem to find it any where.Nevermind I found one.
