Is it a restricted fire arm?

When I did the course and applied for a PAL. I only did the unrestricted version. Not being aware the Govt was planning on changing the rules.
My guess even if I do the restricted course by the time it gets processed. I will probably no longer be able to purchaser any hand gun.

My general interests are in old historical stuff. So if I were to be interested it would be in an old fire arm or replica of an old fire arm. What specifically, I’m not sure.

A genuine pre 1899 is it a fire arm? kind of complicated. Depends on cartridge?
A replica apparently is and requires a RPAL. If it uses cartridges.

What about a genuine antique pre 1899 Black powder pistol? Are they fire arms RPAL required?

I think all cartridges pistols are restricted unless they are actually an antique.

But I was not sure about Cap and Ball.

Just curious, of course the ban or cap may still apply to all hand guns including antique hand guns regardless, just wonder if there is a loophole. Or just SOL.

We used to have the pertinent sections of cc 84 1(a) and (b) , 84 3 and SOR 98-464 posted in the stickies but I can't find them easily. Some basic points related to handguns ; all post 1898 replicas are modern regardless of cartridge, percussion, flint or matchlock. All original muzzle loading handguns ( pre 1898) are antique. Pre 1898 cartridge handguns are antique as long as they are not one of 7 or 8 named cartridges and as long as they have not been converted to an antique cartridge from one of the no go modern cartridges

Congratulations and welcome. You are overthinking the question. In any legal question, go to the Act and the Regulations. Read the text and restate the material. For example, cartridges that are modern and commonly available are not going to be antiques. It is a truth. However, an archaic British handgun cartridge that is an old design and not commercially available is going to be a candidate for antique, but going to the Act there are some fundamental definitions. I suggest you need to curl up with "Cartridges of the World". Mine is 9th edition, and I see they are up to 17th by now. Besides learning fascinating and truly esoteric information about ammunition, you will begin to understand how a technical expert at the RCMP Firearms Lab will answer a lawyer's question.

@53Izzy744 - Neat flowchart. Yours or poached off the interwebs?

I note it needs to be updated to include 20mm bore diameter limits courtesy of the OIC. In fact, muzzle energy for Air Soft and pellets adds a third dimension matrix behind the Antique Yes/No boxes. Theoretically, you could have an antique air pressure long rifle that fires over 500 fps and more than the cut off of Joules. Is it fish or fowl?

He also posted false info about prohibs so one has to wonder about his motives. There’s been more than a few imposters that have shown up here lately.
