Since the idea to get myself a rifle in 5.8x42mm for Christmas wont likely happen (Don't think the Chinese will allow export of the ammo). :(

What about takign a normal run of the mill No. 4 Enfield and Bubba it into a No.4(T) look alike and possibly install a match barrel on it and contour it to the military contour ??

Thinking about ether getting it chambered in 303 British or 303 Epps. Any opinions on the rounds ?? :)

Its the new Chinese military cartridge used in the Type-95 weapons family. Pretty impressive from what I've read.

it's a sin to bubba an Enfield.

Unless it allready looks like this

then what you propose may be an improvement

Bittermansbro,

Well then I feel a sin comming on. :D

As for the 5.8x42mm, its the "new" Chinese military rifle round supposidly outpreforms the 5.56x45mm NATO and the 5.45x39 mm Russian. So I thinking about building a rifle in that caliber just to be unique. :)

Nyles,

Yup exactly. :)

Woodchipper,

I want it to be in full military wood so a sportized rifle wouldn't be on my list, althought I just might settle for one in the end if its easy to fix up. :)

By the time you go the conversion route on a No4 Mk1 to convert it to a look alike sniper, it's going to cost close to $800, if you do it properly.
Why not buy one of the excellent AIA No4 clones from Marstar Or Wolverine Sports and take your pick as to the configuration you want. eg plain or sniper etc.
I have one of these rifles, and can only sing its praises. (M10 B2 Match)
There was a new unfired one for sale in the EE a while back, try doing a search or advertiseing there for one if your not interested in going through a dealer.
The AIA receivers are beefier, stocked in teak and are chambered for 7.62x51 Nato.
They also come with spare mags, sight adjusting tool and picatinny style rail purpose made for the rifles. bearhunter

Hmmm, what about a re-build of bubba's abortion, in proper military wood, but with a new barrel in 7.62x39(and maybe even graft the SKS mag on)?? I guess that's already being done by AIA, but it would make a cool project and sweet plinker. Or a delisle carbine rip off, with the big fake can, but in a little more powerfull a cartridge than 9mm or .45... Cool project!

Better still get a P-14, get it rebarreled to 7mm Rem Mag contoured as the original contour. It is pleanty strong enough to take any of the magnum cartridges, but the 7mm rem mag is as near as can be got to the original 7mm enfield round. The .303 P-14 is a factory bubba, it was never designed to shoot this cartridge.
The P-14 / 17 is a much more accurate rifle than the No4, mine shoots 1/2 " groups @ 100 yds.

Mark If that's an EAL rifle, it's in a little different configuration than usual. I'm not saying it didn't start out as an EAL, but the front and rear sights are different, the butt pad is a black replacemeny and the sling swivels are wrong, no inletting. The trigger gaurd is also milled instead of stamped.
I've seen several EAL rifles that have been attacked, as in further sporterised and this is quite possibly one of them. bearhunter

I would say if you're dropping the $ on a new barrel anyways, get one with a shot out barrel, or a bubba and spend an extra $100 on wood. Since some bubba's only cost $75 and just need wood and a few metal bits, you'd actually save money, save an original milsurp, and have a kik@-s rifle for less money :dancingbanana:.

bearhunter,

Thought about that but I rather stick to the 303 British or the 303 Epps in this rifle. :)

ollie,

One of these days a Delise carbine clone will be mine, but not for this project. :)

Cocked&Locked,

Shucks can I just say a few hail Mary's and be ok ?? :p

Boer seun,

Not my gun yet having bought the Enfield I'm gonna be using as a base. :)

Spencer,

Neat idea but I never really fired any magium rifles, been sticking to standard calibers. :) Plus I got to admit the P14/M1917's dont look as "pretty" to me as the No. 4.

H Wally,

You make a good point, might just pick up a bubba'ed with a bad barrel then. :D

Incase anyone is wondering I'm not gonna be looking for a original scope to make this clone, gonna get myself a Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x24mm. :)

There's alot of sporters out there that are great shooters and well taken care of.
Stocks and bands , as well as other doodads are easy to find . The costs can be around $250 depending on how far the "project" goes....

You should try shooting a couple of magnum rifles, you don't know what you are missing. The .303 was out of date by WW1 and everyone knew it, it's a mediocre cartridge at best.

Not an EAL and never was, bubba'ing an EAL would be a flogging offence

It was a Savage that was completely scrubbed of all markings except one tiny flaming bomb on the rear of the reciever they missed

They being GlobeCo

they tried to make a carbine like the EAL military

Here is a real EAL

EAL.jpg

and a No5 just for comparison

I still say find a bubba and rebarrel then get some wood from numerich

Don't bubba a rifle in military configuration.
