new load with tikka .338 fed , was shooting 210gr barnes originals, now trying sierras as barnes wouldnt shoot. but only manged 1 load to shoot inside an inch. all other loads wre 2.25 -3 inches. none of my shots touched. just really large groups except for 1 or 2 different loads.
should i be happy with that?
i know an inch is stellar and thats the load i will use , but the other groups during load development were hideous and kinda concerned me.
are all tikkas this picky

never seen such a huge variation making loads for other 2 rifles

I would say most T3's arent that picky, I had to bed one I had a couple years back, then it shot much better. How's the crown, hows the mounts, is the scope a known shooter. What's your shooting like in general, do you usually shoot under 2" moa? There are so many variables, you need to just start going thru them bit by bit. Keep us posted.

How many different powders was used? The one load inside an inch....is that the only load for that powder, or were there others? is your gun in a vise, or are you just on the bags?..Homesteader's right...lots of variables...weed em out one at a time....Best of luck!....I'll be watchin...I'm just about to start loading for my new TIKKA 223 Varmint.

Are you used to this caliber?
Did you ask someone else to validate your findings by shooting the gun, too?

here is a little about gun, load, rest, and my shooting

i shoot off a lead slead on a table elbows planted. scope is a 4x burris timberline, burris mounts and leupold rings. scope does not shift as verified with chamber laser. barrel is floated. 150 rounds down tube so far
2 dif powders have been used
6 diff loads of each powder
batches of 4 at rifles max col then 4 20 thou shorter.
so 24 different loads,
but same primers.
using reszed .308 brass.
cases are cleaned, trimmed , primer pockets and flash hole cleaned, necks are deburred, bullets are weighed prior to loading so each of 4 tests load has same bullet weight (i save heavier ones for hunting)
every charge is weighed on digital scale

gun is fired with barrel cool enough that i can touch it (i wait 3-4 mins between shots)

i usually get 1/2 inch with my 7mag, which is a much heavier gun with a 3lb trigger and forend work. but have never shot such wild groups with it. i have had better offhand groups with my 7mm than some of my loads did today.

im happy with 2 out of 24 loads , but 3 -5 of those loads i wouldn't hunt with (they'd miss past 200).
my 2 hottest loads of the h335 managed to make extractor dents in headstamp so i wasnt surprised they went wild a bit.

Very possible it just doesn't like that bullet. You might have to try 3 or 4 different bullets before you find a good shooter. I always try Interlocks first, to see what I have to work with...

Heya 12
FWIW
I worked-up loads for the same gun that is a buds.
Only used H335 and 215gr Sierra's and 210gr NP's.
The above loads showed wider swings in group sizes than other rifles Ive loaded.
Not unlike many 358w's I load. In otherwords, a somewhat same temperment, so far.
Good consistent loads were found.

well then i actually fell a bit better then, so it is finicky

my load best was 44.4 gr h335 behind a 215gr sierra COL 2.829
fed 210 primer, in a t3 lite stainless
any higher than that and groups grown an inch every.2 grains .

same load you run?

Damn. Mine is 44.5gr/CCI 200. basically the same.
Shorter OAL though; 2.79".
I consider mine a near max load for this raffle.
Subjectively and for my particular unit.
I really think alot of this Tikka-338F.
If I didnt have these 35's, I'd grab this one. I just might. My bud has got bugger-all the last two seasons since he picked it up. He just might flip it. My way, I hope/dread.

0.2gr and inch seems quite tempermental.
Try another powder. In my opinion,0.5gr increments is all a guy needs to bother with, with this volume of powder.
My 358w's/250gr and H322 act this way. I use H322 for other things now.
