Is it ever too cold for trap shooting?

I do not know if it common or not! What part of what I said has got you confused? I do not pick targets all that often. When I have, the most I have seen is 4 or 5 holes. Sure I would love to see some with even more than 12 holes:D

When we pick this spring I will remember to take some home for pictures. I was confused since I just assumed over the years you would have seen ones still together peppered with holes but if picking is not common where you are I understand. That or the home made wheel weight super hard shot a lot of the guys use here may be paying a role.:D
All of our targets are out of Ontario.

Huh! Well that might explain why I have not gone straight the last few times out;) I could have swore that I stopped one in mid flight, but it did not break! You can be sure that I swore afterwards:D

Seriously, I have seen rolling bunny tarets with six or seven holes in them and dome on sporting targets hit hard that did not break, but never a regular trap target with more than 4 or 5?

Ok since you guys don't believe a target will stay together with 12 or so holes in it I will ask another question.
Do you believe pellets will bounce off them??Now you know I am nuts right.
Well my friends I have seen that happen on a few occasions during the winter months. One day I was on the stand shooting high 7 with the 28ga, shot and broke the target only to hear a cry from a squad member about 10 feet to the left of me. Dam he said I have been shot. I looked over and he was bleeding on the neck and face. 4 pellets were stuck there just under the skin.A few years later I witnessed another guy getting three in the face on station 8 and that target didnot break.
Both took place in the cold winter months.

Sure pellets will bounce back. It happens usually on a high target like high #7. Pellets will go under the lip of the target on one side and be directed back in the direction of the shooter by the curve on the other side.

I'd also like to see an unbroken target with 12 verifiable pellet hits. Not that I don't believe you but I would like to see it for myself. I've never seen one with more than 5.

Interesting. Just thinking out loud are you guys using the std 108mm orange dome or the 108mm heavier, denser sporting clays composition??

I do believe that pellets will deflect off a spinning target. I think I did read one incident reported here on cgn and witnessed by a now famous moderator. One of the reasons I wear safety glasses and a hat. I think that it does not need cold weather to make it happen. As far as the 12 or more hits, I would just like to see for myself. I will be looking myself this spring as well as waiting for your pics. Where we shoot the most common are white flyers or caldwell. We are talking about clays shot on a trap or skeet range, are we not?

The pellet deflection is 100%. I can let you talk to the guys with the holes in their face on that one. Like I said seen it happen on two occasions one of which was from my gun on high 7. On the targets we use a white in the nights which seem to break easily ( from a different manufacturer than the orange) but just one orange for the rest and are not really set up for true sporting clays.

Thanks, but no need to talk to anyone as I believe in pellet deflection as stated in my post.

Freaks do happen with ricochets that's for sure. We used to see them once in awhile in indoor pistol. Pieces would come straight back or very near to it. I caught one on the cheak just below my glasses once. Haven't seen anything as stiking with shot as described here yet, but there is a lot of evidence on clays you pick up afterward that suggests pellets glance off. I was just thinking that the most holes I have seen is around five too. I've certainly seen four. But then, I don't shoot in some of the weather you guys shoot in. I stay indoors near the fire with the rest of the pu**ys:D.

Best wishes for a merry christmas and happy new year people. I have appreciated many of the comments made here over the past year. Fred

Good reminder to always use safety glasses. At the range its easy cause its mandatory, but out in the bush its easy to forget. Even if you do bring your eye protection, its too easy to toss them aside when they start getting fogged up or uncomfortable. You never know what way that lead will ricochet.

Twice I have witnessed guys at our club hit by ricocheted pellets dig them out from under their skin! Darned right they will bounce off the targets! Both guys I saw hit were shooting skeet at the time on station #8 in SUMMER and as any of you guys who shoot skeet know, we are talking a very concentrated pattern at CLOSE range!

As for targets full of pellet holes from being "peppered" laying on the ground? Fall Guy, I would like to extend an invitation to come spend a few days shooting here in the winter when we hit some high -20's and -30's temps!(February is a good time!!) The targets like anything else in winter get frost penetration in them and they can be downright difficult to break, there are few "inkspot breaks" here in winter and I have seen many many targets seem to explode in a cloud of dust simply keep flying as if untouched not to mention the ones that completely change direction after being hit and not have a single broken piece or wisp of dust appear at all!!! Some of the guys at the club even bring the targets into the clubhouse and sit them next to the woodstove to warm them up on registered shoot days and place radiant or electric heaters in the houses to warm both the machines and targets!!

Instead of having Fall Guy come out on some -30 February day and getting his ass froze off, would it not be easier to digital pic a few of those targets with 12 holes in em and shut us all up?:D

I didn't realise you were from the "Show me State". :)

Thats bullocks. I sure hope you dont pay 300-600 a year for your range like we do here in Ontario, otherwise I would expect them to get to fixing that thrower ASAP.

I have shot in -10 weather which really isn't that bad. Just layer up and get something to cover the face like a balaclava or for something less terrorist looking, they make snowboarding face masks and stuff made of light material that covers the lower part of the face to protect from the wind which is really the thing you need to worry about.

Well i meant to try some trap shooting at the end of fall, but the trap throwers at the range were broken and wont be replaced until the spring.

So hopefully next week i will have time to drive to my cousins and get his thrower and take it to the range.

Does the temperature effect the clays or anything? Or just as long as your trigger finger still functions your good to go?

It's good to see your remark! This thread made it to 33 posts before we heard from you? I am glad you are still with us.;) The best of the season to you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year:D As far as this 12 hole thing goes, there is not much going on and some of us are bored!

Was it 12 separate holes or 6 threw & threw or should that be through & through. Sorry I get confused ;). The most holes in an unbroken Clay I have seen is 7, sorry no pic's. Happy New Year to you too.

Not sure! You will have to ask the spank. He was the op of that remark or you could ask 3mac1 as he said he has seen more than 12 and will provide a pic.

Those must be the targets you see a little "puff" of powder come off but no pieces seem to fall to the ground. I prefer the other scenario when all you see is a circular "ink ball" and nothing falls to the ground. It's called a Full Choke. Or Choke for smoke. :)

We have one club memeber here that has a pellet imbedded in the forend of his 101 skeet gun, and I have another friend who was hit in the head.
