Is it illegal to put a muzzle brake on a PU sniper?

Thank you, I was unaware of what function muzzle brakes performed.

Recoil is an issue with follow-up shots, not the initial shot, which comes into play with semi-automatic rifles. With a bolt action rifle recoil doesn't impact accuracy unless you are afraid of recoil and anticipate it.

Your point is valid, but...

If the rifle kicks less, I shoot it more. If I shoot it more, I get better with it, faster.

I don't really get a "flinch" response from shooting a Mosin (or anything in the .308, 54R, 30-06 range of power), but I do start to feel it by the end of the day.

Downside to muzzle brakes is noise and toasty fingers. Brakes tend to push the concussion wave back and to the sides, which can be a bit obnoxious on the shooting line, and absolutely brain shattering if you forget to put your ear-pro in.

Given the length of a Mosin, I wouldn't expect toasty finger syndrome to be a problem. But I do notice it on my AR. I have a very aggressive brake on my AR, which holds the muzzle absolutely flat when shooting - great for rapid follow-up 3-gun style shooting. But it's so aggressive that I can feel the hot gas on my fore-grip hand.

Fair enough. I'm going to be honest, I come from the perspective of being recoil insensitive to a large degree -- a few hundred rounds behind a Mosin and I'm the same at the end as I was at the beginning. That does colour my opinion on brakes with bolt actions.

Like I said earlier, just my opinion. If OP likes a brake, it's all good.

So it doesn't jump and kick and you flinch less to make a more accurate shot. So you can concentrate on hitting the target and not worry about getting scope eye.

Much better to get scope eye instead of tinnitus....wish someone would have told me that 30 yrs ago!

My daughter shoots my M44 and M39...sans Brake.
If a Mosin 91/30 is too rank for you...that's too bad now isn't it. A shame.
If you like the way it looks, crack on.
I'd add the purpose fit rubber butt pad first, less obnoxious to others around you.

i have one i put on my tula i got from westrifle.i had to open it up a bit as it was rough made on the inside, this has a better quality job from the looks.its not permanent :god forbid: but you roll back quicker and tames the recoil a bit.bonus after a couple boxes of shells.not a sin in my books.

How much do brakes affect accuracy? I've got a reproduction PU that prints on paper well. Just would appreciate the lighter recoil with a brake.
