is it just me or does 308 hurt?

I often test 308 ammo. A typical test is 200 rounds off the bench. I wear a t-shirt and am comfortable. No pain. No bruising.

My wife was shooting a AI 308 with the brake on. She loved it. We had a match and i took the brake off, as required. She came away with major bruising and pain. her AI was heavier than my rifle.

Why is she bruised, and not me? I can only assume she is not pulling the rifle snug.

Recoil seems to be different for different people.

I have a brake installed on my 5R 308, got it put on by my smith when he was installing the bottom metal and swapping out the action. I am a self-confessed recoil wimp but my main reason for getting it was quicker target re-acquisition after firing my shot. with the brake I can hold on target due to less muzzle jump. To be honest the difference in recoil is not alot, as was explained to me the 308 does not have enough muzzle blast for the brake to do much tempering. Having said that I can notice the difference on a "shoot the chicken" evening where we're doing lots of shots.

Mine threads off so if there is anyone on either side of me at the bench I'll take it off.

I see you're in FMM, if you're interested we can try to meet up at the range and you can give mine a shot, see if it helps.

I don't want to insult you so don't take this the wrong way... but you don't have a clue when it comes to recoil.

No insult taken. Don't take this the wrong way........I struggle trying to understand how a gunsmith could be overly recoil sensitive?

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Make sure the fiream is in your shoulder good or it will thump you abit might be why it hurts. Pull the rifle into your sholder with 1 hand and pull it away witht he other and that keeps it in nice and snug and it should feel like shooting nothing after that.

I am not saying to be a ####...

But if I show up to a range and their is not many spots left on the bench and buddy with his breaked .338LM is there I do not expect him to stop shooting so someone can try to shoot their SKS off a rest.

I agree. I showed up late at the range with my . 17HMR and was beside a guy with either a .300WSM or a.338LM. I let out a "Holy ****" when he shot. Then, I worked out his timing and it was fine after that. Deal with it.
