Is it legal to shoot a skunk with my pellet gun?

Car exhaust will certainly kill a skunk, however the new cars with all the pollution systems do not produce that much carbon monoxide. In many cases all you will get is a slightly hested skunk. I have been told that a good dose of propane into the trap will do very well but be careful of any flames near by. And yes when you live trap, they hardly ever spray. I live in the country so when I catch one of the critters I take it out in the back 40 and use the 12 guage on it. Works very well

Skunks will spray when they die. The muscle they use to hold in the spray is continuously in use, when they die the muscle relaxes and they spray, involuntarily.
The "tail up" thing is a myth too, especially right now when they are ready for birth, or already given birth, short nerved to say the least.
I live trap hundreds of skunks a year, and have learned in the 13 years I have owned a nuisance wildlife business, there is only one way to do it, and the tail has nothing to do with it.
The MNR "recommendation" is just that, a recommendation, there is absolutely no law or regulation as to how far you can move that animal, but it is best to put it down.
Shooting them is fun, but be prepared to pay the price, it is inevitable.
Trap it, make it dead and move on.

take the trap and throw it in a body of water or large bin it so it doesn't smell when it dies. it's cruel but your neighbors will thank you.

i have a 50' string tied to my live trap so i can drag it into the dug out

crossbow works well too but you have to remember that when they die they spray

thy aleways stand on there front legs and raise there arse when thy are going to spray that is why live traps that are small enogh to keep them from doing that are your best choice cover it with a tarp are heavy blanket DUTCH

The local game wardens get calls from people having problems with skunks (or other wildlife) and than they call me to go and catch the poor little critter. I catch the skunks in a live trap and release them about 20 km further.
If a skunk is caught in the trap. I approach the trap slowly and quietly using a green garbage bag as a shield, Once at the trap I cover the trap with the garbage bag and than very quietly I slip the trap (cage) into another garbage bag and close it. Than it goes into the back of the pick-up for a smooth ride to the far off country side. At the release spot I open the garbage bag and place a little stick in the door in order to keep it open and than I step back about 20 feet and wait for the little critter to wake up and step out of the trap so that I can go home. The cost for doing this depredation is 75$ per skunk and 42 cents per km.
If the skunk starts to tap it’s foot than you should freeze because that is a sign that it is getting nervous. Let it relax and than finish the job. Good luck if you try this…..

"...Can I legally kill it with one of my pellet guns?..." No. Shooting it with a pellet gun will cause Pepe to get annoyed and spray.
"...skunk that's tearing up my grass..." Likely means you have grubs. Kill the grubs and Pepe will go elsewhere.

I too live in Hamilton and had a skunk issue last year. The city will not do anything about them unless they appear rabid or have attacked your pet. I had one move in under my front steps.
It got into a fight in my driveway with a racoon and sprayed. My house smelled to high hell. Boiled lots of vinigar as I read that helped. Worked while it was boiling but the smell came back. It was so bad we ended up going to a hotel for 2 days while I aired the place out.
What the city will tell you is you have to call one of the wildlife companies like critter ridder. They are expensive and will trap them, then release then back on your property once they have closed the den. I ended up doing it myself.
I would also wake up in the morning to find huge chunks of grass missing as the skunks were digging for grubs. I ended up digging a trench around my yard under the fence. I then stapled chicken wire from the bottom of the fence down about 6 inches into the ground and out 6 inches. I did this around the whole property. I no longer have skunks digging in my yard. They have now moved to my neighbours.

April Fools....right? At least I hope so anyway. Don't shoot the skunk with a pellet gun. Sunray is right. They're like inlaws - take away their food and shelter and they'll leave.

If Murphy strikes:
Recipe for removing Skunk Odour:
1 liter 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 teaspoon Dishwashing Liquid
Mix together in a spray bottle, spray affected areas, rinse, repeat .
Don't get mixture into eyes .

When you shoot an animal, be smart, a real Sportman will shoot for a kleen kill. Use the right powerfull arm, so animal do'nt suffer.

Different towns have different by-laws, the MNR recommends that the animal is destroyed not relocated, and for good reason. If you transport an animal that happens to be a carrier of a disease like rabies or distemper you are transporting a disease to an area that mother nature is not prepared to handle, a very bad idea. Dead is good.
I have a bit of insight on the topic, I own the company that you mentioned.

Thats good to know. At the time the person I spoke to at animal control stated they would not come and that companies like yours were not allowed to relocate or kill any animals.
I did find your website very usefull for tips on how to get rid of skunks and prevent them from coming back. Thanks:)
