Ordered some components today, 350$ worth, not getting much for that price.
Shooting is kind of expensive. Match 308 is like 1.50$ a pop. Even bulk 9mm isnt cheap.

Oh well, at least that will allow me to finish loading some components I have.

Everything is expensive.
It sucks if your broke.
You can go broke in Every hobby.
If someone likes it your going to pay, just the way it is.
No sense in being the richest guy in the graveyard...

Shoot .22 , reloaded 9mm, 7.62x39, and 12 gauge bulk bird shot. Keep your collection small, stay away from these $1000+ guns with all there accessories, suddenly it's not so expensive.

I was driving home from a trap shoot calculating my gas, ammo, motel, entry fees etc and thinking how expensive it was. Then I met a line of hot rods coming back from a car show. 20-30-40-50000 dollars each rolling down the highway. Shooting is cheap compared to some hobbies.

You can shoot rifle A LOT for not much money if you're willing to stick to the really necessary equipment and learn bullet casting and reloading. If you're not into doing that, you can shoot .22 very reasonably.

I spend 5K a year on ammo. I used to spend more than that going out every friday night in my drinking days. Heck Most people at work spend 100$ a month a timmies and say they never have money...lol..

If you know how to budget and work 2 jobs this hobby isn't that bad. ;)

buy a Dillon trimmer! expensive as all hell, but my god it makes 223 case prep sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much simpler. my shooting has gone down in price quite a bit now since I got one! I shoot a lot though... :d

I agree it can be cheap if your shooting surplus, relaods or 22s. The problem for me is it's so god damned addictive! Gotta have every caliber, every make and model, every colour. Let's not forget genre, shotties, black rifles, red rifles, semi autos, revolvers. Get 1 each, then sell em all, then buy more to replace the gaps. Now you need ammo, accessories, range time. I'm down now, all that to say Worth Every Penny!!!

cost is relative.

For myself, I shoot relatively high volume. 90% of my shooting is with cheap bulk 22lr as 300 - 500 rounds of 9mm or 45acp per range trip is out of my cost range. I shoot mostly pistols when I hit the range and I will only buy a 22 pistol if it has a reputation for cycling reliably with the junk ammo. Same goes for my 22lr rifles of which i have 2 bolts and 1 semi. I always buy 22 in bulk and I load up as much as possible when it is on sale. The cost difference between 6 cent bulk and 10 cent mini mags adds up quick (although the mini mags do work much better). i.e. every 1000 rounds would cost 60$ vs 100$ plus tax.

The other 10% of the time I shoot .223, 9mm and 7.62x39. I hand load all of my 9mm and .223 partly because of cost but also because I load to suit the application. I can build 9mm for 16 cents per round. I have 1 semi auto .223 and 1 dedicated bench rest .223. I can build plinking ammo for both for around 26 cents (when supplies are bought on sale) and I can build match ammo for my bench gun for around 48 cents (and that is assuming the brass will last about 5 times).

When I was shopping for a bench gun I wanted the Savage 10BA (no interest in building a 7000$ F class setup..just wanted an good solid mid level setup) The cost for buildling match grade 308/6.5 creedmore (which is all the 10BA is offered in) vs match grade .223 was the reason i decided to build my own similar setup using a 10 FCP-K in a MDT chassis. It cost me the same in the end and my range is only 200 yards so a 6.5 or a 308 wasn't worth it for me. I can run hand loaded 1/2 MOA match ammo through it all day for 40$ as opposed to 80-100$ for the other calibers.

This hobby can be as expensive as you want it to be or as cheap as you want it to be. Give me a Buckmark with a brick of bulk ammo and I will have just as much fun as I would shooting a 2000$ 1911 eating 500 rounds of 45acp.

Is shooting expensive? Compared to what? Competitive around-the-world sailing, horse racing and formula 1 would be expensive. How about owning an aircraft for weekend flying? If you have little disposable (discretionary) income then yes, shooting is expensive. Most hobbies and sports cost money. Some more, some much more than others.

Want/need to cut you costs, shoot a 22 LR.
