is it me or shooting is expensive?

Why worry about money so long as you're not sacrificing essentials for you and your family? Take care of the family, save for retirement and f$&k the rest it won't do any of us any good where we're going.

Knew more than one person who retired or was lucky to get a buy out and early retirement, only to die mere months later.

You like to shoot? You got a bit of $ for ammo?

Go shooting

Shooting per say is not that expensive relative to many other hobbies.
I have owned and flown 4 different aircraft in my adult life, one of them a twin, but had my own businesses to absorb the cost.......which is astronomical. Just to put it in perspective...a 6 hr flight in my twin would cost the same for fuel as a decent midrange Rem/Win/Ruger rifle, and that is only the fuel costs which make up about 35-40% of actual aircraft operating costs.
I used to build and race cars, cost....unfathomable.......you want to go faster? Bring more money........
Now I have a bit of a car collection.......Corvettes, Jaguar, Ferrari, '68 Mustang GT, '55 Bel Aire..........cost?........Irrational.......
I won't even get into the costs of being a lifetime trophy hunter........I can tell you it is likely approaching mid 6 figures with travel and taxidermy......
Probably one of the most rational things I have done was amass a Robert Bateman collection.........which initially isn't too costly and will appreciate massively when old RB tips over. But you can't fly, drive or shoot a picture so really what fun are they.......

The point being is that while shooting is getting somewhat expensive, it is likely still one of the most dollar effective sports one can enjoy. In cost per hour of enjoyment and recreation it isn't all that bad..........if you don't go about it like I have......200+ guns and counting and hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo and 110 sets of dies, tens of thousands of bullets, hundreds of pounds of powder............and still buying !!!!!!!!!!!!
But that's just me..........Like the Cindy Lauper song goes.........."I am a material girl". One thing I can say is my wife and boys are going to have a lot of fun and a very good life selling off all my sh!t, after I tip over.

I thought it was Madonna?

It's only as 'expensive' as your comfortable conscience allows.

My last racecar burned $100 worth of fuel on a 'warm-up' in the pits. When I rolled around the corner and my crew lit the candles on that nitro-burner, if we got everything right, it only cost another $900 by the time I pulled the parachutes 1320 feet later. If we got it wrong,..well,..let's just say it cost a little more.

Horses, dirt-bikes, Drag Racing, Harleys.
NOPE. Shooting ain't expensive. It's simply awesome.
(Hell, it's the safest and most economical hobby I've ever had!!)

Guns are the cheap part...Get a good one!! Shooting IPSC it's not hard to shoot 2000+ rounds a month, attend match and pay match fee's, training clinics, travel to places that require planes, train's, ferries, hotels etc. Yes, shooting adds up quick!!!

i must say, i love this thread. shooting/ reloading is one of my more expensive hobbies but thats because i have friends with boats to go fishing with and my air is free when i want to go scuba diving because a large percent of my free time goes to the fire dept here. i probably spend more on scale model armor kits/ aftermarket upgrades/ paints and weathering supplies than i do shooting. but that stuff makes me an artist right.... another thing is i have to take a 45min ferry plus drive 40 min each way to go to the range. the plus side to that is i dont have have to pay 1.54/L for gas by leaving the island here lol

in reality shooting aint all that expensive for the pleasure/ excitement it brings. at least i dont have to to sent all my firearms away and pay a couple hundred dollars a year to have some guy who's been "certified" to say i can keep my warrany up lol

I can't think of too many other worthwhile hobbies that are as entertaining per dollar.

I get a kick out of all these guys saying they reload for a .10 cents a round....or whatever. Reloading is a fun hobby, but its freakin' expensive.

When I look at what I spend shooting, I think of the people that waste thousands of dollars every year smoking or gambling, and then I feel a lot better.:p

If you think shooting sports are expensive, you should try golf or sailing.
There are shooting sports for every budget, from very modest to luxurious.

Shooting is less expensive than women, drinking, golf, kids, horses, fast cars, boats, or gambling. In fact shooting is so budget-friendly that you should probably be doing more of it.

Make sure you don't confuse "shooting" with "shopping". Some people are addicted to buying stuff, they have dozens of rifles and piles of equipment they've never used but they enjoy acquiring stuff. Nothing wrong with that and I am guilty myself to some degree - but it's not "shooting".

Shopping is so enjoyable, i could not live without it... JP.:)

I went to just get a scope mounted..... 600.... later it's mounted I have a new sling some cleaning stuff and about 100 rounds of ammo.....

My other hobby is sailing.... I dont even need to have a budget line for shooting related expenses. I can just use points to buy ammo.
