I don't even know if they are sold, so I'll just ask this:

If I take a shotgun shell (say a slug), remove the projectile and reseal the shell, would it work like a blank? Do I need to use cream of wheat to "plug" the space left by the removed projectile?

I'm hoping to check function on my semi-auto shotty and my range is closed for a week :ang . I'd fire it on private property out in the sticks just to see if it cycles properly

when we were young my Dad took the shot out of the 410 shells for us to shoot on NYE

EDIT* sorry I didn't see the semi part... Carry on as if ye are normal....

I'm sorry, if you have private property to legally shoot it on, and you have live ammo, why not just pump a few into the dirt? Why bother making blanks?

You can buy blanks for 12ga for sure. I used them for dog training. Reloads don't work very well. I would be shocked however if blanks would cycle a semi

Cheers

If you are out in the sticks can you not use live ammo ?
pounder
Because the property is located in an incorporated town with no shooting allowed. But blanks are ok (already checked). I guess if you make loud noises to scare away problem birds or train a dog it's ok, but heaven help them if you shoot birdshot straight up......

If thats the case, and you are trying to abide by the law, it might not be wise to use live ammo hulls for blanks. If you had to explain yourself to LEOs, they might not buy the "But officer, I converted them to blanks first!" line.

From my home, I could drive to the nearest mom and pop gun store, pay a couple dollar premium for a box of shells, turn towards the hill and hit legal shooting in less than 15km and I live in a city of way over 100,000 people. Where’s the nearest chunk of crown land ?

...no it won't be the same...trained retrievers for 30 years now and just emptying a shell of shot gives just a hollow 'whonk'...blanks use a special powder...forget what it is off hand...

...i have blanks...they are expensive...can probably buy some through your local dog club easiest...i use live AA reloads on my property and am VERY careful...or 209 primers...or .22 blanks...for training depending on my needs

...nothing like an actual 12 ga blank though at several hundred yards on a mark though...

Agree 100%
I reload a lot of shotgun and tried many things to try to make 12ga blanks and all just sounded like poppers so I started buying factory

You will have to make a "blank adapter" for your muzzle to make it cycle.
But then the question is how much opening do you need to leave.

Does not seem really easy to me.
