Is it safe to store and transport...

ok, not really worried about the storage part, but transporting ammo like this over miles of wash board logging roads i am unsure of....
What are you concerned might happen?
I've been storing and transporting 9mm, .223, and 7.62x39 in ammo cans for years.

There is, I suppose, a theoretical possibility that the tip of a bullet might hit the primer of the next and set it off. The odds are infinitesimal and, even if it did, the entire process would be contained in the ammo box anyway. Not a concern in the real world.
Of more concern is the potential for bullets to shift in the cases. At the least, that would alter the accuracy somewhat. Given that it's milspec, that's rather unlikely too.

Some people have a false sense of security, believing that ammunition is volatile. Courier and trucking company workers are the worst.
If you used a pipecutter to cut the bottom (primer) of a live round , set it on a concrete sidewalk, and pounded it with a hammer, it would probably take 30 or 40 hits before you could make it go off.
Disclaimer: if you were to attempt something similar to the above, have the common sense to wear gloves and a full face shield with hearing protection.
If you tossed a can of ammo out of a plane, it will hit the ground and go THUD. Thats all.

Ammo is extremely stable and safe. I am a member of the CF and if you have seen how we treat ammo in ammo cans, you would have absolutely no worries about it.
Just for 2 examples, I have personally used ammo from and ammo cans that was "unloaded" from a truck that was traveling at 30 + kph. And have seen ammo used that fell from a helicopter than was 60 to 100 feet up. Both were used without batting an eye and worked flawlessly.
Also if it takes no damage from this, riding in your truck to and from the range will be no issue.
