Is it too early to dream about Gopher season?

Another 250 today between 2 of us. Cattle on the field so grass was very short. Think we pretty well cleaned them out there. CZs performed as advertised. Little ones seem to be almost full size now. Sorry, no pics.

Was out at the farm helping out today, managed to squeeze in an hour of safari time.

Tagged about 40 of them, they're still quite active, but you need to pick the pasture where the grass has been kept low. Impossible to spot them in the crops or fresh pasture.

Also managed to bag myself some fast food while I was out there.

I might take out my migratory license this year. I've scouted a good quiet spot that draws in a half dozen a day consistently.

Heading out next week - at least one day, possibly two. I got a call to deal with several "issues" - the gophers are up and running wild on a property, along with an invasion of maggies in the gardens. And a certain (un-named here, for now) "large rodent that in Alberta magically transforms from a fur-bearing species to pest rodent when it makes the mistake of moving from crown land onto private land."

Last few years it was a case(5000) in a week. This year, regardless of determination, I won't be able to shoot. My buddy keeps telling me of his count, or rubbing it in actually. Good luck to all that can get out.

Freakin' beauty of a day. Sunny, little wind, not hot, the grass was short and the gophers stood tall. Parked ten feet inside the gate, had 47 in the first 20 minutes. End of the day tally, 374. The 1710 did not disappoint, various flavours of ammo, not one ftf, couple of Win 555 fail to extract. Segmented Dyna point White box anchored them well. CCI std hp do good as do the Win 555, still my goto ammo.

Perfect day... 20 degrees, nice and sunny, but not too hot, and not too much wind.

50 in a couple hours. They're still quite active, and easy to spot now that the pasture (which is fairly short) is nice and green. The main thing keeping the shot count down is I've been "working" this property for years now, and the overall numbers have been in decline since their height 3 or 4 years ago.

Sometimes trying to clear a property seems like you're trying to bail out the Titanic with a soup spoon. But when you work over the same land, year after year, you can start to see the effects.

Sheesh, was it hot today. Managed to get out early, just after 9, heat was already up. Managed 134 before I had to call it a day due to the heat around 1;30. Still beats the crap out of going to work.
