Is it vain?

So I have been shooting 3 gun like crazy, and loving it!!!! Been doing decent too, placed 3rd in my div of 12 last shoot with a keltec su16, pump shorty, and glock 40cal.....

Bragging over,

Is it vain to want an action camera to record the stages and matches etc? Is it worth it as a learning tool?

I think it can be a great learning tool. I just started recording my stages with a GoPro on my hat. Often I'll turn it on a couple mins before I'm up and I don't think about it. People remind me to shut it off after I'm done when they see the red light on. lol! Zero detraction from my focus.

When I watch a recorded stage, I can see all the irregularities in my shooting. Horrible transitions, inconsistent splits, etc. I can also confirm an old habit I had like not looking at the gun when I reload, has been corrected. The camera will tell me if I'm looking at my gun or not. From that I can come up with a training plan, and work on my weak areas.

It can be a great learning tool.

Having somebody else film you is a benefit as you see everything that will need improving. Like you may think you are moving like a cat on crack but the video proves otherwise.

Filming from a hat isnt that beneficial as you only see the gun and the shooting aspect of it. You miss the movement, footwork, reloading and the ability to see the "whole" stage. If you watch a replay of your shooting from a bystanders perspective you can also pick apart your plan from that stage and may notice things you hadnt seen before the beep.

Using both 1st person and 3rd person is best, since each type on their own misses things the other could potentially catch.

how does wearing a camera detract from your focus on shooting a stage? That is a strange thing to say. I mean, if it was a hand crank film camera, maybe, but a gopro mounted on your hat is about as distracting as say, hmmm, a shirt
as for being useful for a training aid, absolutely, both 1st persona and 3rd person footage is phenomenal for training, if you know how to use it for such. It is also just straight up fun when you burn through a stage and can show your buddies or just watch again yourself.

I'd be more concerned that people knew I owned and used a Keltec vs being considered vain for wanting video.

Very useful tool. Can't see much of your shooting form or footwork but still useful.

However!
As a range officer I get very short on patience when I am trying to run a stage smooth and on schedule, when I get the next shooter to the line who doesn't have his $h1t together and wastes mine and everyone else's time screwing around with a camera.
3gun has enough gear to worry about.

Just make sure if you film it, you know your camera is ready rock. Batteries are good, strap is tight and you can find the record button. I do think it's cool to see someone's video of a stage I designed or shot.

Paul, I have sprayed more mouthfuls of coffee at my monitors courtesy your wit than anything else in this subforum. Thanks - I think...

OP - one more - "not vanity" - excellent training tool.

I love having video, I notice so many weird things I do when reloading and moving etc.

Overall it's really helpful. Too bad a lot of ranges do not allow recording.

It's definitely a great tool for learning. There are also smart phone apps out there that can indicate the shot time after processing the video. That can help a lot when reviewing the stage and see where you can improve to reduce the time.

First time using this at an IPSC match, and it's a fantastic training tool. Speaking of reloads, mine went great over the 2 days, (no bouncing the mag off the gun), but, they can still benefit from improvement. Check out this frame from the video:

I like that my trigger finger is safe. I'm also happy I'm actually looking at the gun. lol! Slavex found I wasn't always doing that and let me know. See Slavex? Progress! lol!

This image was at a point where I just finished shooting a target on the move, and was breaking into a run, so - maybe - I can excuse the low gun position, but it clearly isn't turned away enough to see the inside of the magwell, nor is my index finger high enough on the mag. This was from pouch #2.

I'll work on this some more.
