is it worth getting a compensator and if so which one?

im mucking around with a pet project and i picked up a bolt action 223.
the gun has a threaded barrel and im trying to decide if i want to get a comp for it.

ive got a couple guns (mostly pistols) that i have comps on - most are just for aesthetics.
i know that comps with 22's are just for looks and i know that a comp on a 460Rowland really does work.
so would a comp on a bolt action 223 be worth it?
is there enough gasses that putting a comp on the barrel will give a decent return on the investment?

there isnt much jump on a 223 so getting a comp ported on the top i dont think would do much.
i was thinking maybe a linear (forward holes) comp to assist the bullet stabilize more in flight????

again, this is outside my area of expertise.
so i have come here to lay this question on the alter that is CGN experience and ask for some wisdom to be imparted to me.

I've never heard that a linear comp has anything to do with bullet stabilization. It seems that most linear comps are on short ARs, and are appreciated for directing the muzzle blast forward.
Don't know what would be gained by installing a comp on a .223 precision rifle. I wouldn't bother. On an auto rifle, a comp. reduces muzzle flip, which can be an advantage during rapid fire.
Different on a rifle that has actual recoil - the shooter can often observe bullet splash.
 
in my humble opinion it's not necessary on a 223 but it's your money and do what you want with it
I don't think it will help to stabilize the bullet but good choice of bullet vs your twist does
by the way what is the make and model of your rifle and your intended use or need

If you live in an area where you might take the odd shot at a coyote or the neighbors PITA cat then avoid any kind of break... it really hurts the weak side ear! Ask me how I know!

The linear comps throw the concussion forward a lot better but aren't always accurate. Friends of mine have tried the Dlask, ATRS, and Noveske's on 223's and 300 blacks with limited success. YMMV
 
I don't think you'd see much benefit outside of possibly taming muzzle rise. They can reduce recoil too depending on design but if that would be noticeable on a 223 bolt gun, I dunno. Linear comps are just to direct blast forward, not really a big deal on a long barreled bolt gun.

so the forward ones dont do anything for accuracy or jump so they are out.

any brake or comp for a 223 bolt that anyone would recommend or should i just shelf this and shoot it naked?
