Hey guys!

I would like to ask what your opinion is on owning handguns in Canada? The reason I ask is because the way I understand it handguns are of limited use here in Canada due to the fact that they can only be used at a shooting range. I am thinking about buying my first handgun but I don't know if it would be very useful to me.

All input is very much appreciated thanks guys. :)

In Canada they are plenty useful, so long as you plan on doing target shooting or enjoying the many forms of competition available such as IDPA, IPSC, ICORE, etc.

Any other "non range" use would be a bad idea...

There is a great community among pistol shooters and I have made tonnes of friends met via handgun shooting events at various ranges around town.

Definitely worth it. Just ask yourself if you think you'll have fun with it and you'll have your answer. Cheap to shoot too if you get one in .22, 7.62x25, or 9mm. AR-15's are fun restricted guns too...

Well, do you want to own a firearm that you can only use at a range or not? Worth it depends on your interest level and I would surmise that you having to ask the question would be enough for you to answer it for yourself. Is a hunting rifle, a motorcycle, or a snowmobile worth owning? I’d say if you enjoy it, yes.

It's like owning any one of the many high-speed capable vehicles (cars, boats, motorcycles): limited use but man amazing fun.

On a side note I had this very same conversation with a major urban ERT sergeant and he said and I quote "If i lived in a major urban centre that could have a major natural disaster, like an earthquake, I'd like to know I had a pistol by my side".

Just his $0.02

I really enjoy handgun shooting. If you think of it as a sport/hobby it is absolutely worth it. The winters really add value to handguns. Indoor rifle shooting gets old...

A good friend of mine asked me exactly this question.

I took him to the range and we did some “action shooting”. After 1 session he was hooked.

Now he shoots IPSC (And we’re talking “M”, not “C”), IDPA, and 3 gun. He owns all manner of pistols and black rifles.

Not bad for a guy who asked me “who needs an RPAL?”

and PPC, cowboy, bullseye, two gun, three gun. Do it and welcome to the dark side.

I use mine everyday. I don't shoot them as often as I'd like, but every day I own them and possess them, and that is worth doing as a demonstration of commitment to liberty in Canada, and as an affront to the Liberal Party of Canada and social justice warriors everywhere. Handgun ownership is a canary in the coalmine.
