Is it worth reloading for SKS 7.62 x 39 ?

with the recent shortages of surplus ammo on the market and backordering of major components it is not a bad idea of course it depends on the amount of shooting you do with it, you can load them for about 30 cents a round based on a average of 25 grains of powder per round and a 123 grain sp hornady bullet. FMJ bullets are cheaper and all it takes from there is time.

If you cast then its 30 per thousand primers 25 for the powder and 35 for the gas check. Total 90 bucks per thousand. Accuracy is better than surplus. However it is a lot of work. You have to enjoy making ammo as a hobby the hundred bucks or so per thousand that you save probably is not worth the hours that it takes to make the ammo unless you really enjoy making ammo.

Me I enjoy it but I do not enjoy it enough to make it for anyone else then it is too much like work.

Dan I will vote for just shoot the surplus ammo too. It is kind oof like us shooting clays once in awhile. You just cannot do the reloading for the price you can get the Wally world shells for when you look at how fast they get rattled off.

I gotta say you have a cool avatar! Brings back lots of memories!

Thanks,
Noel

I reload many calibers (have to with milsurps), but with the SKS it's all milsurp ammo - same as with the TT-33. I bought them primarily for that reason - cheap milsurp ammo was available. Sometimes you just want to shoot and not care about your brass. Semi's tend to bugger up your brass (and it is easily lost too).

I reload for my SKS and love devoping loads for it. It can be turned into somewhat of a tackdriver. I have loads that are consistant 1-1.5MOA with iron sights at 100yards with SKS. Can't do that with milsurp ammo!

Besides, has anyone tried to buy 7.62x39mm ammo lately, everyone is sold out, so reloading is a great option. You really can't push much out of the cartridge ballistically speaking, but you can load up SP's for hunting and accurate ammo for the range. Plus, its good time at the reloading press.....what's not to love about that!

i'd only reload 7.62x39 if using a bolt action.

having to reload would take the fun out of a X39 semi IMO.
