Is it worth the downsides to go with 300 wsm over a 30 06?

Have a few rifles, but am a one gun, one cartridge type meat hunter...I had an '06 and shot a few moose and boo with it...was always impressed by its capabilities. Thought bigger was better, got a 300 wm...did,'t seem to do much different but add recoil...switching up again...not afraid of longer shots, and do go for bigger game such as bison...and moose. Cost isn't a huge concern, as I don't go through a ton of ammo in reality. Is the '06 sufficient, is the wsm a good compromise...thanks.

There's no discernable difference between the 300WM and 300 WSM, that's the reason for its popularity. If you didn't like the WM, you won't like the WSM. If moose and bison are in your future, skip the 30 cal's and get a 338.

a big con only 3 in the mag for wsm and 5 for the -06 ....

i found when i had one 300 wsm equals to the 300 h&h ....not bad but the original was better especially in 220 grains ... i had a 300 weatherby but h&h was really good .... some people bring me a little itch for one again ... i never loved the 300 win mag ...

for a bison ill go for a 9.3x62 ...

The 300 wsm shoots flatter. Ive used one a fair bit on moose, deer, bears and goats. Its not much more expensive to shoot then a 30-06 and the rifles usually weigh a bit less. If your a hunter on a tight budget the 30-06 might be for you because ammo is $10 a box cheaper but the rifle will still cost you about the same. I personally would go with the 300 wsm.

I had a choice when I purchased my last Benelli R1 - 3006 or 300 WSM. I went with the 3006. Its my heavy bush gun for deer and moose and Im told the bullets suffer less deflection due to small branches
Now If Im shoot longer range distances - I will grab my Mark V ultralight 300 Wby or my Sako 85 270 Wsm

I recently purchased a beautiful Husky 6.5x55 with a lilja hand lapped barrel, bedded, free floated etc. Got a Swarovski Habicht 2.5-10x42 30mm FFP scope for it. apparently I am getting some pet loads to go with it

Proper shot placement and bullet selection will both will produce bang flop.... but which turns your crank. If you are not excited about the caliber you wont have faith for the hard or longer shots. Go with what turns your crank

OP, As you know, shot distance, and bullet weight / configuration are part of the equation. Do your homework, as bison are in a class of their own. All the best:)
